Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )
293 editions published between 1951 and 2015 in 8 languages and held by 4,701 libraries worldwide
The seventeen pieces in Ficciones demonstrate the gargantuan powers of imagination, intelligence, and style of one of the greatest writers of this or any other century. Borges sends us on a journey into a compelling, bizarre, and profoundly resonant realm; we enter the fearful sphere of Pascal's abyss, the surreal and literal labyrinth of books, and the iconography of eternal return. More playful and approachable than the fictions themselves are Borges's Prologues, brief elucidations that offer the uninitiated a passageway into the whirlwind of Borges's genius and mirror the precision and potency of his intellect and inventiveness, his piercing irony, his skepticism, and his obsession with fantasy. To enter the worlds in Ficciones is to enter the mind of Jorge Luis Borges, wherein lies Heaven, Hell, and everything in between

A universal history of infamy by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )
184 editions published between 1935 and 2015 in 10 languages and held by 2,436 libraries worldwide
In his writing, Borges always combined high seriousness with a wicked sense of fun. Here he reveals his delight in re-creating (or making up) colorful stories from the Orient, the Islamic world, and the Wild West, as well as his horrified fascination with knife fights, political and personal betrayal, and bloodthirsty revenge. Spark-ling with the sheer exuberant pleasure of story-telling, this collection marked the emergence of an utterly distinctive literary voice
The book of imaginary beings by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )
50 editions published between 1967 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 2,247 libraries worldwide
"The book of imaginary beings is Borges's whimsical compendium of more than a hundred of "the strange creatures conceived down through history by the human imagination." Imbued with Borges's characteristic wit and erudition, this unique contribution to fantasy literature ranges widely across the world's mythologies and literatures to bring together in one delightful encyclopedia the fantastical inventions drawn from the Kabbalah, Homer, Pliny, Confucius, Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll, and C.S. Lewis, among others. Here readers will find the familiar and expected Dragons and Centaurs, Unicorns and Gnomes, as well as the less familiar and altogether unexpected Animals That Live in the Mirror, The Elephant That Prefigured the Birth of Buddha, the Hairy Beast of La Ferte-Bernard, and other undeniably curious creatures. Throughout, Borges's cunning and humorous commentary is sheer delight." "For this new illustrated edition of The Book of Imaginary Beings, Viking has paired Andrew Hurley, the acclaimed translator of Borges's Collected Fictions, with award-winning illustrator Peter Sis, whose original drawings appear throughout the book. The result is a wonderful work - an Alice-Through-the-Looking-Glass menagerie, which should appeal to fantasy fans of all stripes and ages."--Jacket
Doctor Brodie's report by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )
136 editions published between 1960 and 2012 in 7 languages and held by 2,191 libraries worldwide
Eleven short stories set in Buenos Aires. In "The Gospel according to Mark" a visitor dallies with conversation and is too successful; in "The Intruder" two brothers fall in love with the same woman and seek, tragically, for a solution; and in the title story David Brodie, a Scottish missionary, tries to understand the customs of the Yahoos
Seven nights by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )

The seven lectures which make up this volume were delivered by Borges in Buenos Aires at the Teatro Coliseo, at intervals between June and August 1977. In an Epilogue to the first Spanish edition of the book, published in Mexico in 1980, Roy Bartholomew tells how the lectures were widely taped, appeared later as pirated records, and were widely in a cut and mangled form, in the literary supplement of a Buenos Aires newspaper

"Though his avowed topic is poetry, Borges explores subjects ranging from prose forms (especially the novel), literary history, and translation theory to philosophical aspects of literature in particular and communication in general. Probably the best-read citizen of the globe in his day, he draws on a wealth of examples from literature in modern and medieval English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Greek, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, and Chinese, speaking with characteristic eloquence on Plato, the Norse Kenningar, Byron, Poe, Chesterton, Joyce, and Frost, as well as on translations of Homer, the Bible, and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam."--Jacket

Offered in this book is an Argentinian's view of the literary achievement of the United States. The beginning chapters discuss Mather, Edwards, and Freneau; Franklin, Cooper, and the historians; Hawthorne and Poe; and Whitman and Herman Melville. Other chapters are given to a discussion of three poets of the nineteenth century (Lanier, Whittier, Dickinson); the narrators (Porter, Crane, Anderson, Lewis, Dos Passos, Faulkner, and Hemingway); the West (Twain, Harte, and Norris); the expatriates (James, Stein, Fitzgerald, Pound, Eliot, and Miller); the poets (Masters, Robinson, Frost, Sandburg, Lindsay, Hughes, and Cullen); the novel (Bromfield, Steinbeck, Caldwell, Warren, Wright, and Capote); the theater (O'Neill, Wilder, Saroyan, Williams, and Miller); the detective story (Poe, Van Dine, Gardner, Queen, and Hammett); science fiction (Gernsback, Lovecraft, Heinlein, Van Vogt, and Bradbury); and the Western (Grey). The last chapter presents some oral poetry of the North American Indians. (Hod)
Six problems for Don Isidro Parodi by Jorge Luis Borges( Book )
37 editions published between 1942 and 2010 in 8 languages and held by 932 libraries worldwide
