Part agricultural manual, part political poem and allegory, the Georgics' scenes are real and vivid, and the poet-farmer Peter Fallon restores to life the sights, sounds, and textures of the ancient Italian landscape. - ;'A countryman cleaves earth with his crooked plough. Such is the labour. of his life. So he sustains his native land ...'. "A new edition of the Aeneid requires not only a systematic and reliable assessment of the text, but also a satisfactory and, if possible, complete description of the manuscripts' transmission. Here, not only were the seven Late Antique codices studied anew, but the recensio was also extended by drawing on sources from the Carolingian Age only some of which were incorporated by earlier editors. To this end eight tesimonies which had never been studied previously were collated. As a result the reader has access to an apparatus criticus which is mainly dedicated to textual matters."--Publisher's website

Best remembered for his unfinished epic, the Aeneid, the poet Vergil was celebrated in his time both for the perfection of his art and for the centrality of his ideas to Roman culture. The Eclogues, his earliest confirmed work, were composed in part out of political considerations: when the Roman authorities threatened to seize his family's land, Vergil's appeal in the form of Eclogue IX won a stay. Eclogue I appears to be a thank-you for that favor. Barbara Hughes Fowler provides scholars and students with a new American verse translation of Vergil's Eclogu
