Dalí by Dawn Ades( Book )
32 editions published between 1982 and 2004 in 4 languages and held by 1,203 libraries worldwide
"Salvador Dali is perhaps the most universally famous and popular twentieth-century artist. What accounts for this popularity? Is it his excellence as an artist? The accessibility of his imagery? Or his genius as a self-publicist? In a searching text, completely revised and updated in this edition to incorporate new information that has come to light since Dali's death in 1989, Dawn Ades considers some of the puzzling questions raised by the Dali phenomenon. His early years, the development of his technique and style, his relationship with the Surrealists, his exploitation of Freudian ideas, and the image which Dali created of himself as the mad genius artist are all explored in this brilliant and thought provoking study."--Jacket

L'age d'or by Luis Buñuel( visu )
74 editions published between 1930 and 2011 in 6 languages and held by 877 libraries worldwide
Originally entitled The Frozen Waters of Egotistical Calculation, director Bunuel's L'Age D'or contains all the elements he would exploit in his lengthy career, corrupt clergymen, the church, police, and middle class society all fall under the assault of unrestrained lovers, animals and admirers of the Marquis de Sade. L'Age D'or was even too radical for Bunuel's collaborator Salvador Dali who quickly distanced himself from this cinematic provocation. In a program that accompanied the first screening of the film in France, the following explanation appeared: "The foundations are laid, conventions become dogma, policemen push people around just as they do in everyday life. And just as in everyday life accidents occur in bourgeois society while that society pays no attention whatsoever. But such incidents weaken an already rotting society that is already trying to prolong its existence through priests and policemen.....But it is love that brings about the transition from pessimism to action; love denounced in the bourgeois demonology as the root of all evil. For love demands the sacrifice of every other value; status, family, and honor." During one of the first screenings of the film, the theater was trashed by members of the Fascist League of Patriots. Paintings by Dali, Max Ernst and Man Ray were defaced and the cinema's screen splattered with purple ink. Further screenings of the film were then banned by the French authorities
The autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini by Benvenuto Cellini( Book )
11 editions published between 1936 and 1995 in English and held by 795 libraries worldwide
Benvenuto Cellini was a celebrated Renaissance sculptor and goldsmith; a passionate craftsman who was admired and resented by the most powerful political and artistic personalities in sixteenth-century Florence, Rome and Paris. He was also a murderer and a braggart, a shameless adventurer who at different times experienced both papal persecution and imprisonment, and the adulation of the royal court. Inn-keepers and prostitutes, kings and cardinals, artists and soldiers rub shoulders in the pages of his notorious autobiography: a vivid portrait of the manners and morals of both the rulers of the day and of their subjects. Written with supreme powers of invective and an irrepressible sense of humor, this is an unrivalled glimpse into the palaces and prisons of the Italy of Michelangelo and the Medici
