The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, of Nantucket by Edgar Allan Poe( Book )
87 editions published between 1838 and 2016 in English and German and held by 1,457 libraries worldwide
After reading an 1836 newspaper account of a shipwreck and its two survivors, Edgar Allan Poe penned his only novel, "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket," the story of a stowaway on a Nantucket whaleship who finds himself enmeshed in the dark side of life at sea: mutiny, cannibalism, savagery--even death. Because Pym encounters dangerous mysterious sea creatures and strange exotic animals, the novel has the characteristics of science fiction stories as well as adventure and horror tales
Selected tales by Edgar Allan Poe( Book )
96 editions published between 1922 and 2008 in 5 languages and held by 1,428 libraries worldwide
Edgar Allan Poe's Gothic tales have established themselves as classics of horror fiction, and as the inventor of the modern mystery, Poe created many of the conventions which still dominate the genre of detective fiction. Attentive to the historical and political dimensions of these very American tales, this new selection of twenty-four tales places the most popular, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of the Red Death, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, and The Purloined Letter--alongside less well-known travel narratives, metaphysical essays, and political satires

The murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe( Book )
164 editions published between 1841 and 2016 in 16 languages and held by 372 libraries worldwide
The room was on the fourth floor, and the door was locked - with the key on the inside. The windows were closed and fastened - on the inside. The chimney was too narrow for a cat to get through. So how did the murderer escape? And whose were the two angry voices heard by the neighbours as they ran up the stairs? Nobody in Paris could find any answers to this mystery. Except Auguste Dupin, who could see further and think more clearly than other people. The answers to the mystery were all there, but only a clever man could see them. 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue' by Edgar Allan Poe is widely considered to be the first true detective story. [Publit]

William Wilson by Edgar Allan Poe( Book )
34 editions published between 1839 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 44 libraries worldwide
William Wilson tells the tale of a man who travels around the world pursued by his ghostly double who tries to keep him from sin and vice. This stands out among Edgar Allen Poe's stories for the fact that it is less Gothic, less gruesome, and less melodramatic than most of his other work. You'll find a different kind of storytelling here than you would in The Tell-Tale Heart or in The Fall of the House of Usher. [Publit]

The narrator, 22-year old Napoleon Buonaparte, changes his last name from "Froissart" to "Simpson" as a requirement to inherit a large sum from a distant cousin, Adolphus Simpson. At the opera he sees a beautiful woman in the audience and falls in love instantly. He describes her beauty at length, despite not being able to see her well; he requires spectacles but, in his vanity "resolutely refused to employ them." His companion Talbot identifies the woman as Madame Eugenie Lalande, a wealthy widow, and promises to introduce the two. He courts her and proposes marriage; she makes him promise that, on their wedding night, he will wear his spectacles

Whenever the plague is discovered, the district in which it was found is put under ban and no one is allowed into the area. Barricades are put up to prevent people from entering and exiting these areas and spreading the disease. Despite these rulings, almost everything of value has been stolen from these districts. In addition, the damages of theft, time, and neglect has caused structures to collapse and has made it difficult to get around. The heroes of the story disappear into one of these streets.
