Protogaea by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( file )
20 editions published between 1739 and 2010 in 5 languages and held by 1,641 libraries worldwide
"Protogaea", an ambitious account of terrestrial history, was central to the development of the earth sciences in the eighteenth century and provides key philosophical insights into the unity of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's thought and writings. In the book, Leibniz offers observations about the formation of the Earth, the actions of fire and water, the genesis of rocks and minerals, the origins of salts and springs, the formation of fossils, and their identification as the remains of living organisms. "Protogaea" also includes a series of engraved plates depicting the remains of animals - in particular the famous reconstruction of a "fossil unicorn"--Together with a cross-section of the cave in which it was discovered. Though the works of Leibniz have been widely translated, Protogaea has languished in its original Latin for centuries. Now Claudine Cohen and Andre Wakefield offer the first English translation of this central text in natural philosophy and natural history. Written between 1691 and 1693, and first published after Leibniz's death in 1749, "Protogaea" reemerges in this bilingual edition with an introduction that carefully situates the work within its historical context

Confessio philosophi papers concerning the problem of evil, 1671-1678 by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( file )
11 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 1,298 libraries worldwide
This volume contains papers that represent Leibniz's early thoughts on the problem of evil, centring on a dialogue, the Confessio philosophi, in which he formulates a general account of God's relation to sin and evil that becomes a fixture in his thinking. How can God be understood to be the ultimate cause, asks Leibniz, without God being considered as the author of sin, a conclusion incompatible with God's holiness? Leibniz's attempts to justify the way of God to humans lead him to deep discussion of related topics: the nature of free choice, the problems of necessitarianism and fatalism, the nature of divine justice and holiness. All but one of the writings presented here are available in English for the first time

Discourse on metaphysics and other writings : Discourse on metaphysics, the principles of nature and of grace, the monadology by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )
202 editions published between 1907 and 2013 in 12 languages and held by 1,004 libraries worldwide
"This is an edition of what are arguably Leibniz's three most important presentations of his metaphysical system: the Discourse on Metaphysics, from 1686, and The Principles of Nature and of Grace and The Monadology, from 1714. Based on the Latta and Montgomery translations and revised by the editor, these texts set out the essentials of Leibniz's mature metaphysical views. The edition includes an introductory essay and a set of appendices of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century texts, which help illuminate and contextualize Leibniz's ideas. Among these are extensive passages from Leibniz's Theodicy, many of which are cited in The Monadology."--Page 4 of cover
Theodicy : essays on the goodness of God, the freedom of man, and the origin of evil by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz( Book )
36 editions published between 1951 and 2009 in English and German and held by 937 libraries worldwide
"In order to be truly free, must you act arbitrarily? If an event did not happen, could it have happened? Since there is evil, and God could have made the world without evil, did God fail to pick the best course? Grappling with such simple£yet still intriguing£puzzles, Leibniz was able to present attractively his new theories of the real and the phenomenal, freewill and determinism, and the relation between minds and bodies. Theodicy was Leibniz's only book-length work to be published in his lifetime, and for many years the work by which he was known to the world. Fully at home with the latest scientific advances, Leibniz ultimately rejected the new atomistic philosophies of Descartes, Gassendi, and Hobbes, and drew upon the old cosmology of Aristotelian scholasticism. There could be no conflict, he argued, between faith and reason, freedom and necessity, natural and divine law. Ingeniously defending his postulate of pre-established harmony, Leibniz made important advances in the precise analysis of concepts"--Publisher description

146 editions published between 1710 and 2003 in 5 languages and held by 667 libraries worldwide
