A landmark in the history of opera, Die Walküre is the most popular and most frequently performed opera among those that make up the Ring Cycle. It contains some of Wagner's best-known and memorable music and stands alone as a complete work. This present edition reproduces the full orchestral and vocal score in a clear, modern engraving with large, legible notation for easy reading and study. Do not confuse this with a piano rendering; it is the full orchestral score -- nothing has been left out. Perfect for study, this score is also indispensable for anyone listening to record sets or broadcasts. Wagner's mystical opera makes extraordinary demands on the conductor, but James Levine is renowned for the special affection and authority he brings to this transcendent work. The music shimmers and glows, evoking the legendary world of the Knights of the Holy Grail and the pure fool who brings healing power to the land. Peter Hofmann stars as the questing title hero, Jerome Hines sings the wise old man, Gurnemanz, and Mignon Dunn is the voluptuous Kundry, whose erotic temptations almost ensnare the young hero

Not many companies have the resources to put on Wagner's only comedy with all the élan it deserves. The Met does, particularly when Music Director James Levine is conducting: his affection for the work is matched only by his skill at bringing it to life. Levine leads a top-flight cast of solo singers, plus a huge chorus and orchestra. James Morris conveys all of Hans Sachs wisdom, and humanity; Karita Mattila sparkles as Eva, the young woman in love with Walther, the impetuous knight, ardently sung by Ben Heppner

The ring of the Nibelung by Richard Wagner( Book )
23 editions published between 1900 and 1977 in English and German and held by 1,490 libraries worldwide
"Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen is one of the most influential theatrical works ever written. It is a powerful music-drama on a grand scale, a full appreciation of which depends on an understand-ing of exactly what is being sung. Wagner's German was deliber-ately archaic and romantic; until recently, there has been no singing translation which transmits with genuine feeling the complex and literate text, matching the stress and inflection in the score. This translation, commissioned by the English National Opera Company for their highly successful production of The Ring in English, is the work of Andrew Porter, music critic of The New Yorker. The edition includes a German text and Mr. Porter has provided an essay dealing with the problems of translating the work."--Publisher's description
