The film begins with a young couple picknicking on the grounds of Soldier's Field, Chicago, Illinois. From a scene one meter wide, one meter from the camera, we pull away vertically at a rate of acceleration increasing distance ten times for each elapsing ten seconds. The scene widens from the same center, as we see the city of Chicago and Lake Michigan recede into the view of North America, and the earth's outline shows against the reaches of space. At 10¹⁶ meters, we are moving at a tremendous speed, one light year from the earth. The galaxies now become mere clusters of galaxies, at 10²⁴ meters, 100 light years away
