The Nazi dictatorship : problems and perspectives of interpretation by Ian Kershaw( Book )
4 editions published between 1992 and 2003 in French and held by 118 libraries worldwide
"As an exploration of the interpretational issues that eddy around the Third Reich, Ian Kershaw's Nazi Dictatorship has become a classic account. But if its core remains unchanged, its contents must necessarily reflect both new public controversies and the onrush of fresh research. In the forth edition there are many changes of detail to accommodate this need and substantial rewritings of two chapters. No subject among those dealt with in earlier editions has been the subject of such intensive research - and bringing such rapidly changing interpretations - as 'Hitler and the Jews' and, accordingly, that chapter has been considerably changed. The book's final chapter has also undergone significant revision, to take account of the 'Goldhagen phenomenon', and also to glance back over the changing trends of research on the Third Reich as, with the passing of the generations, Hitler and his regime themselves pass into history."--Jacket
Die Juden in der islamischen Welt : vom frühen mittelalter bis ins 20. Jahrhundert by Bernard Lewis( Book )
4 editions published between 1986 and 1989 in French and held by 114 libraries worldwide
Against a vivid background of Jewish and Islamic history, Bernard Lewis portrays the Judaeo-Islamic tradition -- a cultural relationship parallel to the Judaeo-Christian heritage. He traces its origins in the early Middle Ages, its flowering, and its ending, followed by the incorporation of most of the Jews of Islamic countries into the state of Israel. The book examines the relations of Islam and other religions; the formative and classical periods of the Judaeo-Islamic tradition in medieval Islam; the development of the Ottoman Empire; and its eventual demise in the twentieth century. This book was originally published in 1984.-- Publisher description

Vanishing diaspora : the Jews in Europe since 1945 by Bernard Wasserstein( Book )
2 editions published in 2000 in French and held by 44 libraries worldwide
In 1939 there were ten million Jews in Europe. After Hitler there were four million. Today in 1996 there are under two million. On current projections the Jews will become virtually extinct as a significant element in European society over the course of the twenty-first century. Now, in the first comprehensive social and political history of the experience and fate of European Jews during the last fifty years, Bernard Wasserstein sheds light on the reasons for this dire demographic projection. Drawing on a rich variety of sources, many hitherto unpublished, Wasserstein begins with the painful years of liberation after World War II when Jews tried to recover from the destruction of their people and communities, then traces the Jewish experience in Eastern and Western Europe in different national and ideological contexts. His important and original inquiry covers the impact on Jews of post-war reconstruction, Soviet occupation, the Cold War, and the collapse of communism. These, combined with the memory of Nazi genocide, the persistence of antisemitism, the development of Israel, and the Middle East conflicts, shaped the history of European Jewry in the second half of the twentieth century. With exceptional eloquence and conviction, Vanishing Diaspora argues that survival for European Jews ultimately will depend on choices they themselves make to reverse trends. They have an alarmingly imbalanced death-to-birth ratio, and many have jettisoned religious observance in the spirit of a secular Europe, losing their cultural distinctiveness as well as their numbers. This often painful story of destruction, irreparable loss, and the shattering of ties thus serves as a wake-up call, and a dramatic warning

"In this visionary look into the future, Freeman Dyson argues that technological changes fundamentally alter our ethical and social arrangements and that three rapidly advancing new technologies - solar energy, genetic engineering, and worldwide communication - together have the potential to create a more equal distribution of the world's wealth." "Written with passionate conviction about the ethical uses of science, The Sun, the Genome, and the Internet is both a brilliant reinterpretation of the scientific process and a challenge to use new technologies to close, rather than widen, the gap between rich and poor."--Jacket
