This approach is particularly interesting for developing countries which often lack the expertise or data to produce good national accounts and are thus deprived of a vital policy-making tool

Chinese economic performance in the long run by Angus Maddison( Book )
35 editions published between 1998 and 2007 in English and French and held by 694 libraries worldwide
The study provides a major reassessment of the scale and scope of China's resurgence over the past half century, employing quantitative measurement techniques which are standard practice in OECD countries. It uses a comparative approach to explain why China's role in the world economy has changed so dramatically in the last thousand years. It concludes that China is likely to resume its natural role as the world's largest economy by the year 2015, thus regaining the position it had held until 1890. A dynamic link (StatLink) is provided for each table and graph, which directs the user to a web page where the corresponding data are available in Excel® format.--Publisher's description

The future of Asia in the world economy by Colm Foy( Book )
12 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 352 libraries worldwide
Based on scenarios produced by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the OECD Development Centre, the authors consider ways in which long-term Asian growth can be consolidated to the benefit of the global economy as a whole. Looking beyond current economic difficulties, Asian countries have strong growth prospects, assuming they pay due attention to domestic institutional strengthening, investment in human capital and the conservation of environmental capital. This volume was produced as a product of the third "International Forum on Asian Perspectives", organised annually by the ADB and the OECD Development Centre. The purpose of the Forum is to encourage interchange of ideas between Asian and European specialists on questions of economic importance to the two regions
Waging the global war on poverty : strategies and case studies by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development( Book )
8 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 312 libraries worldwide
Eradicating poverty has long been one of the priorities of development co-operation. Yet, despite undoubted progress towards this goal, the strategies adopted at the international and national levels remain controversial. Poverty reduction is a complex issue, involving numerous players in a host of economic, social, political and environmental policy fields. The originality of this publication lies in its approach to identifying best practice, an approach which is as open and thorough as the state of the art will allow. How realistic is it to seek to cut extreme poverty by half by the year 2015? What are the most effective strategies employed by donors, be they development agencies or developed countries? What lessons can be learned from the experience of the developing countries? Clearly, these and many other questions are still unresolved. This publication approaches them by giving a broad overview of general poverty-reduction strategies and objectives. It also presents five particularly enlightening case studies on Bolivia, Côte d'Ivoire, the State of Kerala in India, Malaysia and Uganda
Policies to promote competitiveness in manufacturing in sub-Saharan Africa by Augustin Kwasi Fosu( Book )
7 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 187 libraries worldwide
Primary commodities dominate African exports, yet these products are extremely vulnerable to variations in weather conditions, world demand and prices. If the continent is to obtain optimum benefit from the integration and opening of the world economy, this heavy reliance on primary products must be reduced. There is, thus, a new and important role for African countries' manufacturing industries. The papers in this volume address three important issues: the role of exchange-rate policy in enhancing the competitiveness of African manufactured exports; the steps that can be taken to improve production efficiency; and the role of institutional and structural reforms in promoting competitiveness in manufacturing and in improving Africa's attractiveness to foreign direct investment. An Epilogue evaluates progress and developments since the conference which gave rise to this volume was held
Guaranteeing development? : the impact of financial guarantees by J. T Winpenny( Book )
5 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 115 libraries worldwide
This volume tests the relevance and usefulness of guarantees to public and private actors in developing countries, especially for funding development projects. The presence of guarantees from multilateral or bilateral agencies can encourage financial flows either to increase, or to go where they otherwise might not. In this way, they can have a positive effect on sovereign ratings as well as their immediate direct effect on the local development environment. As a bonus, this study finds, development guarantees can help stimulate and stabilize local capital markets, thus providing future benefits for both public and private investors.--Publisher summary
The ladder of competitiveness : how to climb it by Orsetta Causa( Book )
12 editions published in 2006 in English and French and held by 109 libraries worldwide
Tables of national competitiveness give an easily comparable ranking of the winners and losers of global economic competition, but they do not explain why the poor countries are four times less productive than the rich ones or why some rich countries are twice as productive as others. Using empirical data from over 50 countries, this book shows how even small differences in a number of factors combine to boost or block productivity. Governments need such information to set priorities. Investors need it too, and two new rankings are proposed as alternatives to a simple comparison of industrial productivity. The first, called the investor ranking, is based on infrastructure, human capital and total factor productivity. The second, exporter ranking, is for investors whose prime concern is for a production platform well-integrated into world trade. Combining the new rankings with a more traditional one produces three groups of countries, termed balanced, high potential, and vulnerable. Group membership reserves some surprises: you may be rich, but that does not mean you are not vulnerable.--Publisher's description
