The palaeography of Gothic manuscript books : from the twelfth to the early sixteenth century by Albert Derolez( Book )
37 editions published between 2001 and 2012 in English and held by 433 libraries worldwide
"This book is the first to present a detailed survey of all book scripts in use in Western and Central Europe from c. 1100 to c. 1530 (with the exception of Humanistic script). This period has been poorly served in almost all other palaeographical handbooks. By adopting a largely new classification of scripts based on objective criteria which incorporates many of the terms currently in use, this book aims to end the confusion which has hitherto obscured the study of late medieval handwriting. It is based upon an examination of a very large number of dated specimens, and is thus the first survey to take full advantage of the incomparable palaeographical resource provided by the Catalogues of Dated Manuscripts. The text is illustrated throughout with over 500 drawings of letters and symbols. Actual-size reproductions of 160 manuscripts provide datable specimens of all the scripts discussed, accompanied by partial transcriptions and palaeographical commentary."--BOOK JACKET

The making and meaning of the Liber Floridus : a study of the original manuscript Ghent, University Library MS 92 by Albert Derolez( Book )

"The Liber Floridus (1121), composed, written and illustrated by Canon Lambert of Saint-Omer, is the earliest illustrated encyclopedic compilation of the Latin West. Its autograph (Ghent, University Library, MS 92), a masterpiece of Romanesque book art and one of the most complicated manuscripts ever made, has been studied by the author for almost half a century. The present book is the culmination of this research and provides a detailed codicological and textual analysis, showing how this wonderful book was put together and which are the hidden ideas Lambert sought to develop in its hundreds of texts and pictures dealing with astronomy, geography, natural history, history, religion and countless other subjects. The book is illustrated with some 100 colour reproductions and numerous diagrams of quire structures. Three tables help the reader to understand the author's argument, and full indices give access to the text and provide the basis for further investigation of individual chapters and pictures."--Publisher description

With this volume 'Corpus Catalogorum Belgii' comes to an end. It contains the critical edition of all surviving medieval inventories of the library of the Dukes of Burgundy. This was in the fifteenth century one of the most prestigious princely collections in the world, consisting of hundreds of mostly illuminated manuscripts. The hitherto available editions of these inventories were for the most part incomplete or unreliable. In the present book the editors have provided critical editions of the inventories already known, based on all existing archival documents, and of a series of newly discovered ones. The substantial introduction, dealing with the growth and the organization of the collection, the notes giving complete details on the documents and on all persons mentioned in them, and the full indices make this book an indispensable tool for all students of medieval literature (especially French), manuscript illumination and Burgundian culture
