The golden ass by Apuleius( Book )
43 editions published between 1900 and 2015 in English and held by 1,084 libraries worldwide
"With accuracy, wit, and intelligence, this remarkable new translation of The Golden Ass breathes new life into Apuleius's classic work. Sarah Ruden, a lyric poet as well as a highly respected translator, skillfully duplicates the verbal high jinks of Apuleius's ever-popular novel. It tells the story of Lucius, a curious and silly young man, who is turned into a donkey when he meddles with witchcraft. Doomed to wander from region to region and mistreated by a series of deporable owners, Lucius at last is restored to human form with the help of the goddess Isis. In a translation that is the most faithful and the most entertaining to date, Ruden reveals to modern readers the vivid, farcical ingenuity of Apuleius's style."--Inside jacket flap
Metamorphoses by Ovid( Book )
22 editions published between 1989 and 2001 in 3 languages and held by 929 libraries worldwide
In the "Metamorphoses" of Apuleius "The Golden Ass," we have the only Latin novel which survives entire. It is truly enchanting: a delightful romance combining realism and magic. The hero, Lucius, eager to experience the sensations of a bird, resorts to witchcraft but by an unfortunate pharmaceutical error finds himself transformed into an ass. He knows he can revert to his own body by eating rose-petals, but these prove singularly elusive; and the bulk of the work describes his adventures as an animal. He also retails many stories that he overheard, the most charming being that of Cupid and Psyche (beginning, in true fairy-tale fashion, '"Erant in quadam civitate rex et regina"'). Some of the stories are as indecent as they are witty, and two in the ninth book were deemed by Boccaccio worthy of inclusion in the "Decameron." At last the goddess Isis takes pity on Lucius. In a surprising denouement, he is restored to human shape and, now spiritually regenerated, is initiated into her mysteries. The author's baroque Latin style nicely matches his fantastic narrative and is guaranteed to hold a reader's attention from beginning to end

" ... tells the tale of a certain Lucius, a young man who -- rather like his creator -- leads an itinerant life full of action and incident which ultimately lands him in trouble. His curiosity to discover the secrets of witchcraft (the biographical echoes continue) results in his metamorphosis into an ass. The novel then follows its unfortunate hero through a series of largely bruising, humiliating and hilarious exploits until he is restored to human form through the intervention of the goddess Isis."--Publisher's website

The tale of Cupid and Psyche by Apuleius( Book )
13 editions published between 1639 and 2012 in English and held by 147 libraries worldwide
Is Cupid and Psyche a romance, a folktale, a Platonic allegory of the nature of the soul, a Jungian tale of individuation, or an archetypal dream? This volume provides Joel Relihan's lively translation of this best known section of Apuleius' Golden Ass, some useful and illustrative parallels, and an engaging discussion of what to make of this classic story

The Greek world of Apuleius : Apuleius and the second sophistic by Gerald N Sandy( Book )
2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 27 libraries worldwide
This is the first study since that of Paul Vallette in 1908 to place the Latin writer Apuleius in the context of the (Greek) Second Sophistic. The first three chapters elucidate the scholastic goals of both classical cultures during the Roman Imperial period. Apuleius' works share the stage here with representatives of the second-century Greek cultural paradigm. They define patterns of discourse and fit selected examples of analogous Apuleian strategies into the broader cultural framework. Subsequent chapters focus closely on the complete Apuleian corpus under the general headings of Apuleius in the roles of orator, philosopher and novelist. Two of Apuleius' philosophical works and his novel the Golden Ass provide an unparalleled opportunity to analyze the methods of translation and adaptation employed by this major writer of the second half of the second century
