"The short-lived Qin dynasty unified China in 2.21 B.C. and created an imperial legacy that lasted until 1911. The extraordinary story of the First Emperor, founder of the dynasty, is told in the Historical Records of Sima Qian, the Grand Historiographer and the most famous Chinese historian. He describes the Emperor's birth and the assassination attempt on his life, as well as the political and often brutal events that led to the founding of the dynasty and its aftermath. Sima Qian recounts the building of the Great Wall, the 'burning of the books', and the construction of the First Emperor's magnificent tomb, a tomb now world famous since the discovery of the terracotta warriors in 1974. Sima Qian's love of anecdote ensures that his history is never dull, and Raymond Dawson's fluent translation captures his lively and vivid style. Chronicling recent archaeological developments and questioning Sima Qian's biases, K.E. Brashier's preface highlights the importance of the Grand Historiographer's account and Dawson's translation in the twenty-first century."--Jacket

The scholars by Jingzi Wu( Book )
25 editions published between 1957 and 2001 in English and Chinese and held by 245 libraries worldwide
From the back cover: "One of the great Chinese novels, The Scholars, departs from the impersonal tradition of Chinese fiction, as the author makes significant use of autobiographical experience and models many characters on friends and relatives. An eighteenth century satire, it is outstanding among Chinese classic novels. The author mercilessly exposes the decadence of the literati produced by the feudal examination system, the disastrous effects of that institution, and the corruption of the feudal society. A literary masterpiece of the Ming Dynasty, this landmark work was the first in China to criticize social abuse."

The complete stories of Lu Xun by Xun Lu( Book )
26 editions published between 1981 and 2014 in Chinese and English and held by 227 libraries worldwide
One major theme in the stories in this collection is that habits of mind (psychology or "spirit") need to be examined; improvements in material conditions and institutions, while important, are not sufficient by themselves to renew China. See in particular A Madman's Diary and The True Story of Ah Q.Lu Xun employed point of view in his stories in a way that was novel at the time for Chinese literature, helping readers consider new possibilities about the true nature of the reality around them.A second major theme in the stories is the problem of how members of the intellectual class are to live their lives. It is a theme in many stories, including Kong Yiji, My Old Home, In the Wine Shop, Regret for the Past, and others.A third major theme in the stories is commentary on traditional customs and institutions. The stories look at the specific dysfunctions of particular customs and institutions, and also at the general result in which people are discarded. It is a theme in many stories, especially Kong Yiji and The New Year Sacrifice

Considered by many to be the founder of modern Chinese literature, he wrote in baihua (the vernacular) as well as classical Chinese.
