Something to die for by James Webb( Book )
6 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and Japanese and held by 1,391 libraries worldwide
This is a story of war in the 1990s-a limited "peacetime" battle raging in a distant Third World desert, which requires unusual technical expertise and great physical courage from the men who fight it. It is also the story of two politicians, a cunning young bureaucrat about to claim the highest ground in Washington, and a savvy political operator from the heartland with one deal too many to his name. Between them, there is a beautiful woman and a man-to-man competition that becomes a determinant in global strategy. In the balance are the lives of thousands of fighting men, perhaps even the course of history. Alternating his views between the increasing grimness of the battlefield and the manic jockeying on Capitol Hill, James Webb draws his graphically etched characters to a memorable confrontation and treats the reader to a darkly illuminating vision of contemporary history, Washington-style -- Page 2 of cover

"I'm the only person in the history of Virginia elected to statewide office with a Union card, two Purple Hearts, and three tattoos." Jim Webb--the bestselling author and now the celebrated, outspoken U.S. Senator from Virginia--presents a clear-eyed, hard-hitting plan of attack for putting government to work for the people, rather than special interests, and for restoring the country's standing around the world. Infused with the intelligence, force, and firebrand style that has earned Senator Jim Webb enormous national attention from his earliest days in office, A time to fight offers a thorough and provocative assessment of the thorniest issues Americans face today, along with cogent solutions drawn from Webb's lifetime of experience as a much-decorated Marine, a widely traveled, award-winning journalist and novelist, a highly placed member of the Reagan administration, a Senator with a son who fought as a Marine in Iraq and, perhaps most important, a proud scion of America's vast but frequently ignored working class

Field sampling for attributes related to the shelf life of mountain pine beetle-killed lodgepole pine in the sub-boreal spruce (SBS) biogeoclimatic zone by James S Thrower( Book )
3 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 29 libraries worldwide
In 2006, a total of 360 lodgepole pine (PI) trees were destructively sampled from 45 sites that had been killed by the mountain pine beetle (MPB) over the previous several years. These trees were sampled from the sub-boreal spruce biogeoclimatic zone in Quesnel, Vanderhoof, and Burns Lake areas in north central British Columbia. The trees were distributed evenly across the geographic areas as well as across a sample matrix that included three classes of time since death, three classes of diameter at breast height, and three classes of soil moisture regime. The sample trees were felled and bucked into 2.5 m lengths with stem analysis discs taken for detailed measurements of moisture content, checking characteristics, and blue stain content. Detailed measurements were taken on trees prior to falling and on the site and stand conditions where the trees were sampled. Dendrochronology techniques were used to estimate the year of death of the MPB-killed trees, in addition to the subjective assessment of years since death estimated in the field. This report describes the procedures to collect the data and the associated database submitted to the Canadian Forest Service. The sample trees are summarized in the report, but this project did not include any analysis or interpretation of the data.--Document
