Great expectations : John Singer Sargent painting children by Barbara Dayer Gallati( Book )
4 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 379 libraries worldwide
"The title of the book makes ironic reference to Charles Dickens's famous novel Great Expectations and signals that Sargent's paintings of children are interpreted here in light of the expectations associated with childhood as it was represented in the art and literature of the late nineteenth century - a period then acknowledged as the advent of the "Century of the Child." The investigation traces how Sargent reacted to the contemporary shift in childhood's meaning and used child imagery to advance his professional standing with the public and critics. In turn, this strategy aided in removing child imagery from the grip of Victorian sentiment, elevating it to a higher level in the hierarchy of artistic subject matter." "The book includes five essays by three notable art historians, as well as a Biographical Index of Child Sitters, and is illustrated with a wide array of Sargent's works, including the earliest known oil portrait from his hand (an intimate 1875 portrait of his five-year-old sister) and some of the best-loved paintings of his career. In addition, a wealth of comparative works by his contemporaries is provided along with a selection of Sargent family photographs, some of which are published here for the first time."--BOOK JACKET

Living with AIDS : a photographic journal by Sal Lopes( Book )
3 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 320 libraries worldwide
"Living with AIDS is a moving and inspiring look at how many people - whether actually infected or close to those who arehave come to grips with the disease. Determined and courageous, they demonstrate ways in which they have fashioned full, vital lives in the face of this daunting illness, and show that infection with the virus that causes AIDS need not lead to abject fear and despair." "Sal Lopes's stirring photographs fall into three interrelated sections. First is "The Quilt"--An inspiring look at the AIDS Memorial Quilt, each panel of which is created by people who have cared about and lost someone to this disease; the creation of these panels assures that their loved ones live on in memory and helps the quiltmakers come to terms with their lives and loss. Next comes "The Buddies," volunteers who have become caregivers for people with AIDS they have never met before. Finally "The Boyce Family" recounts the story of a married couple who cared enough about children born with HIV antibodies - and a child with full-blown AIDS - to make them the core of their adoptive family." "In her thoughtful introduction about photography and AIDS, Vicki Goldberg examines how photographers have dealt with the physiological manifestations of this disease or its political ramifications. But Sal Lopes is more concerned with conveying the courage and humanity demonstrated by those affected by it. Living with AIDS embodies a message of encouragement and strength that will provide reassurance for, and inspire hope in, anyone affected by what has become an unavoidable aspect of the human condition in our contemporary world." --Book Jacket

Résumé sur la jaquette: "Artists and filmmakers in the early twentieth century reshaped our vision of the American West. In particular, the Taos Society of Artists and the California-based artist Maynard Dixon departed from the legendary depiction of the "Wild West" and fostered new images, or brands, for western art. This volume, illustrated with more than 150 images, examines select paintings and films to demonstrate how these artists both enhanced and contradicted earlier representations of the West. Prior to this period, American art tended to portray the West as a wild frontier with untamed lands and peoples. Renowned artists such as Henry Farny and Frederic Remington set their work in the past, invoking an environment immersed in conflict and violence. This trademark perspective began to change, however, when artists enamored with the Southwest stamped a new imprint on their paintings. The contributors to this volume illuminate the complex ways in which early-twentieth-century artists, as well as filmmakers, evoked a southwestern environment not just suspended in time but also permanent rather than transient. Yet, as the authors also reveal, these artists were not entirely immune to the siren call of the vanishing West, and their portrayal of peaceful yet "exotic" Native Americans was an expansion rather than a dismissal of earlier tropes. Both brands cast a romantic spell on the West, and both have been seared into public consciousness."
