Philolaches is a good for nothing so-and-so: he seems to live purely to spend his father's cash, or, when he cannot get it, to borrow against it. Everything he loves is paid for by someone else's efforts, including the lady of his dreams, ex-courtesan Philematium. Now while his father is away earning money, Philolaches is spending it all on one big house party. But when his father returns unexpectedly, Philolaches is stumped. Luckily, his trusty slave Tranio has a plan: he bundles his master's guests into a closet, and distracts the father with a tall tale that the house his haunted. As foolish as Philolaches is, so is Tranio quick-witted, building yarn upon fib upon lie to keep his master's father in the dark
Aulularia by Titus Maccius Plautus( Book )
286 editions published between 1492 and 2017 in 11 languages and held by 805 libraries worldwide
(Quelle: Spielberater)
Three comedies by Titus Maccius Plautus( Book )
134 editions published between 1835 and 2012 in 9 languages and held by 775 libraries worldwide
The special genius of the Roman comic poet Plautus is the wedding of native Italian farce with the mature and polished constructions of Greek comedy. The three plays translated in this book all contain that almost inevitable kernel of Greek comic plot: the love affair. But they have little else in common. In the first, a self-inflating soldier tries to live up to his image of himself as a lover. In the second, a beautiful maiden is rescued from an evil pimp. And in the third, an ill-starred husband fancies himself in love with his wife's young housemaid. Clever, or at least ambitious, slaves tend to move the action, in which the rudeness of farce merges with exuberant wit, satire, and parody

Still funny after two thousand years, the Roman playwright Plautus wrote around 200 B.C.E., a period when Rome was fighting neighbors on all fronts. These three plays tap into the mix of fear, loathing, and curiosity with which cultures, particularly Western and Eastern cultures, often view each other, always a productive source of comedy
