The works of Josephus : complete and unabridged by Flavius Josephus( Book )
62 editions published between 1640 and 2008 in English and held by 1,439 libraries worldwide
Overview: This renowned reference book has served scholars, pastors, students, and those interested in the background of the New Testament for years. The insight given into the Essene community, the destruction of Jerusalem and the interpretations and traditions of the Old Testament in first century Judaism is invaluable. The outlook of Josephus, a late first century Pharisee and historian, on Jesus and the New Testament documents is enlightening and provocative. As an original reference, The Works of Josephus is essential to a full understanding of the first century, the time of Christ and the New Testament. Complete and unabridged, this is the best one-volume edition of the classic translation of Josephus' works. The entire text has been reset in modern, easy-to-read type; numbering corresponding to that used in the Loeb edition has been added to the text; and citations and cross-references have been updated from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers

"Paint yourself into the picture of 1st Century Palestine. You haven't completed your biblical understanding until you've traveled back to the lands where it all took place. Now you can hear the sounds and see the sights, meet the people who were there when it happened. This comprehensive account from the legendary Jewish historian takes you right into the action, setting up the historical relevance of first-century events, taking you all the way from Creation to Roman occupation. In the process, Josephus provides substantial first-hand corroboration of the biblical record. Most importantly, you'll meet the historical Jesus in Josephus' writing, as well as John the Baptist and other familiar faces. You'll be able to understand the background of the New Testament like never before" --Cover, p. 4

Jewish antiquities by Flavius Josephus( Book )
150 editions published between 1534 and 2014 in 10 languages and held by 708 libraries worldwide
Caligula was assassinated in January A.D. 41. Since he was the last of the Julii, and he left no heir, it seemed that the dynasty of Caesar and Augustus was finished. Accordingly, the Republic was restored, but then a coup d'état b the Prætorian Guard put Claudius in power. The dramatic events of these few days are a crucial turning-point in Roman history -- the moment when the military basis of the Principate was first made explicit. Tacitus' account has not survived, and Suetonius and Dio Cassius offer no adequate substitute. Fortunately, however, the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus chose to insert into his "Jewish Antiquities", as an example of the providence of God, a detailed narrative of the assassination plot and its aftermath taken from contemporary and well-informed Roman sources. This narrative, one of the most important texts in Roman imperial history, has until now been unaccountably neglected. -- Back cover

Contre Apion by Flavius Josephus( Book )
78 editions published between 1486 and 2015 in 8 languages and held by 626 libraries worldwide
This volume contains a fresh English translation of Josephus' apologetic treatise 'Against Apion', based on the new textual research conducted by the Münster Josephus project. It also provides the first English commentary on this treatise, with comprehensive treatment of the historical, literary, and rhetorical features of Josephus' most engaging literary product. 'Against Apion' contains the most important evidence for hostility to Judeans in antiquity, as Josephus responds to both Egyptian and Hellenistic slurs on the Judean people, their origins and character. Josephus' robust defense of his people, with his striking account of the Judean constitution ("theocracy"), also constitutes the finest example of Judean apologetics from antiquity

Josephus, soldier, statesman, historian, was a Jew born at Jerusalem about 37 CE. A man of high descent, he early became learned in Jewish law and Greek literature and was a Pharisee. After pleading in Rome the cause of some Jewish priests he returned to Jerusalem and in 66 tried to prevent revolt against Rome, managing for the Jews the affairs of Galilee. In the troubles which followed he made his peace with Vespasian. Present at the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, he received favours from these two as emperors and from Domitian and assumed their family name Flavius. He died after 97. As a historical source Josephus is invaluable. His major works are: History of the Jewish War, in seven books, from 170 BCE to his own time, first written in Aramaic but translated by himself into the Greek we now have
