Learning how to mean : explorations in the development of language by M. A. K Halliday( Book )
35 editions published between 1975 and 1986 in 3 languages and held by 833 libraries worldwide
This book describes how the child acquires a linguistic system before he is capable of verbal utterances or has developed the ability to structure language in a meaningful way. The first chapter of the book contains a discussion of previous language development studies on learning the mother tongue and proposes a hypothesis of language development that is grounded in a sociolinguistic framework. The second chapter presents the results of an intensive study of the language acquisition of one child beginning shortly after birth. Chapter three describes the three phases a child goes through in the process of developing language that has specific meanings as determined by society. In chapter four, language development is viewed as a semiotic process, that is, as an aspect of the social system. Chapter five analyzes the transitional phases that occur as language acquires meaning and synthesizes the literature review, hypothesis, research, and previous discussion in the book. The sixth chapter focuses on how a child adapts language in conformity with the social system. (Rb)
Explorations in the functions of language by M. A. K Halliday( Book )
47 editions published between 1973 and 1984 in 3 languages and held by 782 libraries worldwide
The five papers included in this book are all concerned with exploring a functional approach to language study. "Relevant Models of Language" suggests a functional interpretation of the child's early language development; "The Functional Basis of Language" related the child's language developmental functions to a functional theory of the adult language; "Language in a Social Perspective" presents an interpretation of language function in socially significant contexts; "Towards a Sociological Semantics" formulates some general principles in which meaning is related both to the internal structure of language and to the social contexts in which language operates; and "Linguistic Function and Literary Style" applies linguistic theories to the study of literature using William Golding's novel, "The Inheritors." 37 editions published between 1990 and 2012 in English and held by 285 libraries worldwide
This volume contains selected papers from the Eight World Congress of Applied Linguistics held in Sydney in 1987. Volume I starts off with an overview of the field by G. Richard Tucker in which he identifies two areas: innovative language education and language education policy. The overal focus of the papers to follow focus on the individual language learner, how that individual, in given contexts or in interaction with specific others, develops a command of a first language, of two or more first languages, or of a second language, in home and in classroom settings. At the same time, cutting across these variables, there is a gradual shifting of attention from investigations of the language learning process to proposals for language teaching curricula and syllabuses
On grammar by M. A. K Halliday( Book )
23 editions published between 2002 and 2007 in English and held by 276 libraries worldwide
For nearly half a century, Professor M. A. K. Halliday has been enriching the discipline of linguistics with his keen insights into the social semiotic phenomenon we call language. This ten-volume series presents the seminal works of Professor Halliday. This first volume contains seventeen papers, including a new chapter entitled 'A Personal Perspective', in which Halliday offers his own current perspective on language and linguistic theory. The first part of the book presents early papers (1957-66) on basic concepts such as system, structure, class and rank. The second part highlights how, over the span of two decades (the 1960s to mid-1980s), Halliday developed systemic theory to account for linguistic phenomena extending upward through the ranks from word to clause to text. The last part, 'Construing and Abstracting', includes more recent work, in which Halliday discusses the issues confronting those who study linguistics, using Firth's description of linguistics - 'language turned back on itself'

This text offers an introduction to words and corpus linguistics. From this foundation it explores the much wider issues that are inevitably raised but somehow marginalized in lexicology (the study of words) and corpus linguistics: how are individual words integrated into language? What are the real benefits of studying the large quantities of text now available in corpora? How do we best conceptualise meaning itself?

In language, there exists the potential for constructing new discourses, among them scientific discourse.
