Almost from the moment of his death in Florence in 1861 the literary reputation of Clough was overshadowed by the "Clough Myth" of the "brilliant failure". Nevertheless, one of his contempoaries prophesied, "He will be ranked with Mattew Arnold, as having found a voice for this self-questioning age". Michael Thorpe's selection and introduction show this judgement to be nearer the truth than current opinion might suggest
