Original edition of the first work to popularize pirate stories, written by a West Indian buccaneer. This Dutch edition was translated into Spanish in 1681, and from Spanish into Englisch in 1684, into French in 1686 and afterwards reprinted many times. In the rush of publications the first edition, in Dutch, was completely lost out of sight, and the Spanish was lonf taken for teh first. This work is the prototype of an entire literature of books on pirates and buccaneers in all languages up to the present day. Ant the end of the volume is an appendix geving a short account of the possessions, revenues, etd., of the Psaniards in America, and a complete list of alle the ecclesiastical funtionaries in Spanish America, with notices of the revenues, etc. Exquemelin or Esquemeling's career as buccaneer ran from 1666 to 1672 and took place in the Caribbean, on the Spanish Main, and in the South Seas. Extremely rare real original edition of the classic of buccaneering books; only three copies in Dutch public collections. - Sabin 23468; Muller, America, 578; Church 658 (imperfect copy); Not in Tiele or Cat.
