Abstract: The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives met to prepare or revise specifications; to perform toxicological evaluation and re-evaluation of certain food additives; to review recent toxicological studies; and to consider the principles and procedures of the evaluation process. The committee's findings serve as guidelines for industry and for health and food authorities. Its report focuses on the importance of information about food additives and contaminants in developing and industrialized countries, the replacement of suspect substances by unproven chemicals, and the need for a continuing input of information. The specific substances which were evaluated or re-evaluated include avian pepsin, butylated hydroxyanisole and hydroxytoluene, powdered cellulose, gallates, glycerol ester of rosin, mineral oil, mineral salts, and chemically modified starches. This Framework Programme reflects the Hyogo Framework for Action and strives to assist member countries implement its five Priorities for Action for the agricultural sectors. This Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper presents case studies of the policy, governance and institutional issues of marine protected areas (MPAs) in Japan, Mauritania, the Philippines and Samoa. It is the second of four in a global series of case studies on MPAs. An initial volume provides an analysis and synthesis of all the studies. The set of global MPA case studies was designed to close a deficit in information on the governance of MPAs and spatial management tools, within both fisheries management and biodiversity conservation contexts. The studies examine governance opportunities in and constraints on the use of spatial management measures at the national level. AQUASTAT, FAO's global information system on water and agriculture, was initiated by the Land and Water Division with a view to presenting a comprehensive picture of water resources and irrigation in the countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and providing systematic, up-to-date and reliable information on water for agriculture and rural development. This report presents the results of the most recent survey carried out in the six countries of the Central Asia region, and it analyses the changes that have occurred in the ten years since the first survey. Following the AQUASTAT methodology, the survey relied as much as possible on country-based statistics and information. The report consists of three sections. Section I describes in detail the methodology used and contains a glossary of the terms used. Section II contains the regional analysis presenting a synopsis on water resources, water use and irrigation in the region and the trends over the last ten years. It also describes the legislative and institutional framework for water management as well as environmental issues and it presents prospects for agricultural water management from the countries' perspective. Although Kyrgyzstan is rich in water resources, the productivity of its waters is low and its indigenous fish fauna is relatively poor, with only a limited number of commercially valuable species. However, as the waters are suitable for growing valuable cold-water fish species, several fish species were introduced and regularly stocked when Kyrgyzstan was part of the Soviet bloc. As a consequence of these introductions, both the number and proportion of indigenous fish species gradually declined. After Kyrgyzstan became an independent State, seed and fingerling production from hatcheries first fell significantly and then stopped completely, while illegal and unregulated fishing increased. This combination led to the collapse of both the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Currently, national and foreign investors are increasingly interested in investing in the potentially lucrative cage farming of exotic rainbow trout, particularly in the unspoilt waters of Lake Issyk Kul, which may further endanger the efforts to restore and maintain the original fish fauna of the lake. The objective of this document is to analyse the available information on historic practices, experiences and lessons learned on species introductions so that more suitable and improved practices can be used in future stocking programmes in Kyrgyzstan and elsewhere in the Central Asian region. Information is provided to support the management of exotic and indigenous species in Kyrgyz fisheries and aquaculture activity. It includes an analysis of the long-term consequences of possible stocking programmes for exotic and native species and the use of cages in natural waters. The information presented in this document includes a detailed inventory of all waterbodies, fishery and fish culture resources in Kyrgyzstan. It will also serve the rehabilitation and sustainable development of both the fishery and aquaculture sectors in Kyrgyzstan in an ecologically sound manner.
