Sport in Soviet society : development of sport and physical education in Russia and the USSR by James Riordan( Book )
22 editions published between 1976 and 1980 in English and held by 788 libraries worldwide
The role and development of sport in Soviet society received little contemporary attention, in the West or in Russia. Although it was widely banned after the Russian Revolution, and viewed as a tool developed by the bourgeoisie for the training of body and mind during the rise of capitalism, the USSR was among the world's sporting powers. This 1977 book examines the evolution of sport in Russia from its early association with health and hygiene, through a period of functional association with labour and defence, to its post-war importance as a means of enhancing the prestige of Soviet communism abroad. The historical role of Soviet sport is followed from the considerable part that sport played during the period of rapid industrialisation, through its strange fate during the years of mass repression, to its emergence as a major institution after the Second World War.--From publisher's description

Gulliver's travels by Jonathan Swift( Book )
6 editions published between 1991 and 1998 in English and held by 472 libraries worldwide
An adaptation of Swift's satiric fantasies about Lilliput and Brobdingnag. Two of the most appealing of Gulliver's adventures: Lilliput, where the human is a giant among dwarves, and Brobdingnag, where the human is a dwarf among giants. These are the stories of Gulliver's Travels, Jonathan Swift's classic tale of fantastic adventures in far-off lands, brilliantly retold by James Riordan in rich, vivid prose that captures all the whimsy and satire of the original in the modern language of today's children. The illustrations by noted artist Victor Ambrus are rich and colorful, delicate in detail, strong in composition, and permeated with humor. And the insightful -- often scathing -- social commentary that Swift wove into his original tale remains intact, providing fascinating reading for adults as well as children

"Identity is analysed by showing how European nations define sport in their own way; Germany including naturalism, Spain - bullfighting, England - cricket and croquet, and so on. The editors' approach refuses to confine 'sport' or 'gymnastics' to a single, culture-specific definition. The globalisation of sport is acknowledged to be constantly giving sport new meanings and activities." "The contributors are eleven sports historians whose intention is both to provide an insight into the unique development of sport in European society and to reveal the related historical processes that have shaped European sport over the last two hundred years."--BOOK JACKET
