The practical guide to humanitarian law by Françoise Bouchet-Saulnier( Book )
2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 231 libraries worldwide
"Definitions are often the first step toward granting or denying a person's rights. Now in a thoroughly revised and updated edition, the Guide provides precise meaning and content for terms such as terrorism, refugee, genocide, and intervention - concepts that the media have introduced into everyday conversation, yet whose legal and political meanings are often obscure. The Practical Guide to Humanitarian Law explains the terms, concepts, and rules of humanitarian law in accessible and reader-friendly alphabetical entries. Written from the perspective of victims and those who bring them assistance, the Guide outlines the dangers, spells out the law, and points the way toward dealing with violators and violations of the law." "Entries in the Guide are complemented by detailed bibliographic references, addresses, phone numbers, and internet addresses of the organizations presented; a thematic index; and an up-to-date list of the status of ratification of the more than twenty international conventions and treaties concerning humanitarian law, human rights, refugees, and international criminal law."--Jacket
Life, death, and aid : the Médecins sans frontières report on world crisis intervention ( Book )
4 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 223 libraries worldwide
"With the end of the Cold War came the hope of a 'New World Order'. Yet the tragedies of war and famine continue to dominate our headlines. Humanitarian law is still violated every day. Emergency aid from the United Nations and donor governments remains inadequate and military interventions often fail to restore durable peace." "Life, Death and Aid highlights the ten most pressing humanitarian crises of the 1990s and examines the policies, actions and effectiveness of the United Nations, donor governments and relief organizations involved in emergency aid and peacekeeping operations." "Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is the world's largest independent organization for emergency medical aid. Created in 1971 by a group of doctors disillusioned with the political conditions attached to aid operations, the organization has become famous for bringing swift and direct aid to all populations affected by war and natural disaster regardless of government consent."--Jacket

Donka : radioscopie d'un hôpital africain by Thierry Michel( visu )
7 editions published between 1996 and 2015 in English and French and held by 105 libraries worldwide
"Donka Hospital in Conakry, Guinea--the largest public hospital in the country--is similar to many African hospitals. Built in 1959 just before independence, it was designed based on a European model, with little consideration for the realities of Africa. Its plight typifies the entire African health sector. Over the years the hospital has accumulated substantial debt that neither the Guinean state nor international agencies will pay. Compelled to develop its financial autonomy, the hospital enforces a pay-as-you-go policy. This financial strategy is rigorously applied, but at a high human cost. In this hospital of last resort, families strive to save a child or parent, but without money, there are no drugs and little chance for survival. Revenues rise, but access to treatment diminishes. As we follow the floor-to-floor progress of patients and their families, doctors and nurses, the alternating portraits form a living chronicle where tragedy meets hope"--Container
