Drawing on the impressive collections of the National Library of Australia, this comprehensive book provides children with an interesting and engaging overview of the history of Australia. It covers many of the main events in the nation's history, including: ·Ancient Australia ·The Dreaming ·Voyages of discovery ·Founding colonies ·The explorers ·The lure of gold ·Settling the land ·The growth of cities ·Federation ·Becoming Anzacs ·Modern times ·The Great Depression ·Defending Australia ·Building for the future ·Controversial issues ·The sporting life ·Embracing multiculturalism ·On the world stage ·Through good times and bad Packed with colourful images and interesting facts, The Big Book of Australian History introduces children to the many people and events that have made Australia what it is today. It also encourages them to think about how Australia has evolved as a nation. The book features stunning images from the collections of the National Library of Australia by artists such as Ellis Rowan, John Gould and S.T. Gill. It also tells the stories of some of the most significant contributors to Australia's cultural, political, sporting and social life, including Captain James Cook, Governor Lachlan Macquarie, Prime Minister Gough Whitlam and aviator Charles Kingsford Smith. Ages 10+. This is a book to dip into and savour. Author Peter Macinnis' enthusiastic retelling of Australia's story is infectious. Among the big events and the great moments that have shaped the country, Macinnis also includes lesser-known, interesting details that bring Australian history to life. For example, did you know that, in 1934, the ABC developed 'synthetic' cricket, in which radio broadcasters gave a ball-by-ball description of the game, using sound effects to simulate the sound of bat on ball and the applause of the crowd? The Big Book of Australian History was created with the help of a consultant historian, Indigenous advisor, and experienced history editor and writer Dr Stephanie Owen Reeder, winner of the 2012 NSW Premier's Young People's History Prize

Topsy turvy world : fascinating Australian animals by Kirsty Murray( Book )
1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 139 libraries worldwide
To the first Europeans who came to Australia, everything seemed topsy turvy. Christmas was in the summer and trees shed their bark but not their leaves. And the animals were bizarre. There was a bird that laughed like a donkey and a type of greyhound that bound along on its hind legs like a hare. There was an animal in Tasmania whose nocturnal screeches sounded like the devil and a river creature that had a ducks bill at one end and a beavers tail at the other. The Europeans had never seen anything like these animals before and gave them names similar to those of the European creatures they already knew. They drew and painted odd pictures of them, showing they did not understand the animals habits. In one illustration, a wombat is standing on its back legs and in another a Tasmanian tiger is wrestling with a platypus of the same size
Augustus Earle, travel artist : paintings and drawings in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia by Jocelyn Hackforth-Jones( Book )
5 editions published between 1979 and 1980 in English and held by 122 libraries worldwide
Augustus Earle (1793-1838) was born to travel and to paint. Living in the era before photography, Earle was one of the world's most irrepressible travel artists. His paintings are valuable both as works of art and as documentary records of historic and ethnographic significance. This publication gives an overview of some of Earle's most significant works held by the National Library of Australia. The major part of this resource is a series of 161 watercolours and drawings acquired in 1959 from Mr (later Sir) Rex Nan Kivell (1898-1977)

Included in the collection are gripping accounts of occasions both great and minor. Here you can find the heart wrenching account of a bewildered little terrier dog refusing to leave the bayoneted dead body of its master just killed at the Eureka Stockade. Read an amazing description of Bert Hinkler landing his absurdly tiny little aeroplane (he'd just flown it across
