The classic field guide What Bird Is That? has been known to bird enthusiasts throughout Australia for decades, ever since it was first published in 1931. It was written and illustrated by Neville William Cayley (1886-1950), son of artist Neville Henry Cayley (1854-1903) who, before him, had also had dreams of publishing a 'big bird book'-a comprehensive publication on Australian birds-but it never came to fruition. Cayley and Son charts the lives and works of this Australian father-and-son pair of bird artists
The quintessential bird the art of Betty Temple Watts by Viola Temple Watts( file )
2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 761 libraries worldwide
Betty Temple Watts (1901-1992) developed an interest in birds in her early married life while living in Iran and Papua New Guinea. Although she had studied art formally as a nineteen year old, it was not until she was 48, and settled in Melbourne, that she decided to immerse herself in her bird art. Betty spent much of her time practising drawing, but was constantly critical of the results. In spite of her harsh selfjudgement, others had a high opinion of her skill and, in 1952, she received her first commission, going on to provide bird illustrations for numerous publications until she was in

Many voices : reflections on experiences of indigenous child separation ( Sound Recording )
3 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 182 libraries worldwide
This book "brings together testomonies from all sides of the history of Indigenous child separation in Australia. The book includes the voices of children who were taken from their families, adults who cared for them in institutions and Missions, families who took them into their homes and government officers who enacted official policies. Hundreds of individuals told their stories to the National Library of Australia's 'Bringing Them Home' Oral History Project - their words propel this history from start to finish. Editors Dorren Mellor and Anna Haebich have drawn together a diverse group of expert writers, whose words are interwoven with artworks and poetry by Indigenous artists, many of whom are interviewees for the Project. The audio CD brings the voices of the interviewees to life. 'Many voices' presents a spoken history that remains as compelling as the moment these events occurred. In their genorosity and courage, its contributors have created an invalubale gift to all Australians." Inside flap of cover

Topsy turvy world : fascinating Australian animals by Kirsty Murray( Book )
3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 159 libraries worldwide
To the first Europeans who came to Australia, everything seemed topsy turvy. Christmas was in the summer and trees shed their bark but not their leaves. And the animals were bizarre. There was a bird that laughed like a donkey and a type of greyhound that bound along on its hind legs like a hare. There was an animal in Tasmania whose nocturnal screeches sounded like the devil and a river creature that had a ducks bill at one end and a beavers tail at the other. The Europeans had never seen anything like these animals before and gave them names similar to those of the European creatures they already knew. They drew and painted odd pictures of them, showing they did not understand the animals habits. In one illustration, a wombat is standing on its back legs and in another a Tasmanian tiger is wrestling with a platypus of the same size
