Aesthetic theory by Theodor W Adorno( Book )
322 editions published between 1970 and 2014 in 19 languages and held by 2,953 libraries worldwide
The culmination of a lifetime of aesthetic investigation, Aesthetic Theory is Adorno's major work, a defense of modernism that is paradoxical in its defense of illusion. In it, Adorno takes up the problem of art in a day when "it goes without saying that nothing concerning art goes without saying." In the course of his discussion, Adorno revisits such concepts as the sublime, the ugly, and the beautiful, demonstrating that concepts such as these are reservoirs of human experience. These experiences ultimately underlie aesthetics, for in Adorno's formulation "art is the sedimented history of human misery."

Philosophy of modern music by Theodor W Adorno( Book )
219 editions published between 1949 and 2013 in 14 languages and held by 2,567 libraries worldwide
"In 1947 Theodor Adorno, one of the seminal European philosophers of the postwar years, announced his return after exile in the United States to a devastated Europe by writing Philosophy of New Music. Intensely polemical from its first publication, every aspect of this work was met with extreme reactions, from stark dismissal to outrage. Even Schoenberg reviled it." "Despite the controversy, Philosophy of New Music became highly regarded and widely read among musicians, scholars, and social philosophers. Marking a major turning point in his musicological philosophy, Adorno located a critique of musical reproduction as internal to composition itself, rather than as a matter of the reproduction of musical performance. Consisting of two distinct essays, "Schoenberg and Progress" and "Stravinsky and Reaction," this work poses the musical extremes in which Adorno perceived the struggle for the cultural future of Europe, between human emancipation and barbarism, between the compositional techniques and achievements of Schoenberg and Stravinsky." "In this completely new translation - presented along with an extensive introduction by distinguished translator Robert Hullot-Kentor - Philosophy of New Music emerges as a key to the whole of Adorno's illustrious and influential oeuvre."--Jacket

Against epistemology : a metacritique : studies in Husserl and the phenomenological antinomies by Theodor W Adorno( Book )
131 editions published between 1956 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 1,359 libraries worldwide
This classic book by Theodor W. Adorno anticipates many of the themes that have since become common in contemporary philosophy: the critique of foundationalism, the illusions of idealism and the end of epistemology. It also foreshadows many of the key ideas that were developed by Adorno in his most important philosophical works, including Negative Dialectics. Against Epistemology is based on a manuscript Adorno originally wrote in Oxford in 1934-37 during his first years in exile and subsequently reworked in Frankfurt in 1955-56. The text was written as a critique of Husserl's phenomenology, but the critique of phenomenology is used as the occasion for a much broader critique of epistemology. Adorno described this as a 'metacritique' which blends together the analysis of Husserl's phenomenology as the most advanced instance of the decay of bourgeois idealism with an immanent critique of the tensions and contradictions internal to Husserl's thought. The result is a powerful text which remains one of the most devastating critiques of Husserl's work ever written and which heralded many of the ideas that have become commonplace in contemporary philosophy

Composing for the films by Hanns Eisler( Book )
119 editions published between 1947 and 2007 in 6 languages and held by 1,318 libraries worldwide
This classic account of the nature of film music aesthetics was first published in 1947. Its value comes from a unique combination of talents and experience enjoyed by the book's authors. Eisler's time at Hollywood gave him a particular insight on the technical questions which arise for composers when music is used in the production of films; while Adorno was able to contribute on wide aesthetic and sociological matters as well as specifically musical questions. Above all, the authors envisaged the book as a contribution to the study of modern, industrialised culture; and, in this respect, it has a particular importance to the whole area of Cultural Studies
Critical models : interventions and catchwords by Theodor W Adorno( Book )
108 editions published between 1963 and 2010 in 5 languages and held by 1,238 libraries worldwide
Between 1959 and his death ten years later, Adorno published fourteen paperback collections of his work, often combining revised and new essays - publications intended for an educated, politically and culturally influential audience. Two collections of those works are combined in this single volume - Interventions: Nine Critical Models (1963) and Catchwords: Critical Models II (1969). These books are passionate examples of Adorno's postwar commitment to unmasking the culture that engendered Nazism and its antihumanist nightmare

In search of Wagner by Theodor W Adorno( Book )
77 editions published between 1952 and 2009 in 5 languages and held by 1,144 libraries worldwide
Richard Wagner's works are among the most controversial in the history of European music--because of their powerful aesthetic qualities and, in wider political terms, because of their eventual assimilation into the official culture of the Third Reich. This concise synoptic account by the most brilliant exponent of Frankfurt School Marxism subtly interweaves these artistic and ideological qualities. It provides deft musicological analyses of Wagner's scores and of his compositional techniques, orchestration and staging methods, quoting copiously from the music dramas themselves. At the same time it offers incisive reflections on Wagner's social character and the ideological impulses of his artistic activity [Publisher description]
