The romance of the fungus world : an account of fungus life in its numerous guises, both real and legendary by R. T Rolfe( Book )
17 editions published between 1925 and 1974 in English and held by 481 libraries worldwide
Mankind has always had a love-hate relationship with fungi. On the positive side, edible mushrooms and truffles are gastronomic delights, and certain fungi possess medicinal properties. On the other hand, many mushrooms are poisonous, and fungi can inflict costly damage on crops and other property. This captivating book explores both sides of the story, examining aspects usually overlooked in texts and field guides. The survey begins with fungi lore from mythology and legends, focusing particularly on the plants' association with devils, witches, and fairies. A balanced portrait of fungi in the real world considers not only the ruin caused by the plants but also their uses in medicine and industry and as foods. Ranging far and wide in its topics, the narrative offers a light touch and plenty of enthusiasm, making this book fun for everyone with even a casual interest in mushrooms. In addition, serious mushroom hunters will find this volume a practical reference and a fascinating resource for leisurely browsing

Nicholas Crabbe; or, The one and the Many, a romance by Frederick Rolfe( Book )
23 editions published between 1958 and 1977 in English and Undetermined and held by 325 libraries worldwide
This novel is a detailed account, thinly disguised as fiction, of the four years following Rolfe's arrival in London in the 1890s, when he embarked upon his chequered literary career. The novel gives Rolfe's admiration for adolescent beauty and is structured as romances of androgynous obsession. Crabbe's beloved in this novel is based on Rolfe's sometime poetic collaborator Sholto Douglas (1873-?). The sad conclusion of the novel suggests that Rolfe believed that such relationships could not succeed, at least among Englishmen

The quest for Corvo by A. J. A Symons( Book )
4 editions published between 1934 and 1952 in English and held by 101 libraries worldwide
First published in the United States in 1934, this extraordinary tale follows A.J.A. Symons's eight-year quest to uncover the life story of Frederick Rolfe - a.k.a. the Baron Corvo, a lonely, arrogant genius - and construct something remarkable of it. The author of the brilliant novel Hadrian the Seventh, Corvo was by turns a gifted painter, teacher, student of the priesthood, historian, and inventor of a process of "deep sea photography." He also had a veritable genius for making enemies and lived out his last years as a penniless exile. With letters (many of them masterpieces of invective), excerpts from his novels, and accounts of unusual interviews with Corvo's friends, fans, and enemies, Symons chronicles a passionate investigation into Corvo's secret life - and produces an uproariously comic, ultimately tragic, and stunningly rendered work of art
The desire and pursuit of the whole : a romance of modern Venice by Frederick Rolfe( Book )
43 editions published between 1934 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 92 libraries worldwide
The Desire and Pursuit of the Whole is a scurrilous sensual fantasy, a vindication of a man who felt betrayed by his friends, and a testament to a fervent affection for the city of Venice. Highly autobiographical, it chronicles the hectic descent of Nicholas Crabbe into destitution and starvation amongst the glories of Venice. His passage is brightened only by his love for his servant the boy-girl Zildo; a love which becomes ever more obsessive. Written a year before Thomas Mann's Death in Venice, this novel is both more passionate and more deeply autobiographical. It was never published in the author's lifetime because of its libellous content and the homoerotic aspects of the narrative, and when it eventually found a publisher in 1934 it was altered throughout. This is the first complete edition
