The spirit of mediæval philosophy by Etienne Gilson( Book )
57 editions published between 1936 and 1993 in 3 languages and held by 2,059 libraries worldwide
All these lectures converge to this conclusion: that the Middle Ages produced, besides a Christian literature and a Christian art as everyone admits, this very Christian philosophy which is a matter of dispute. No one, of course, maintains that this mediaeval philosophy was created out of nothing, nor yet that all mediaeval philosophy was Christian -- just as no one maintains that mediaeval literature and art were created out of nothing or were wholly Christian. - Preface

"In this work, the eminent Catholic philosopher Etienne Gilson deals with one of the most important and perplexing metaphysical problems: the relation between our notion of God and demonstrations of his existence. Gilson examines Greek, Christian, and modern philosophy as well as the thinking that has grown out of our age of science in this fundamental analysis of the problem of God."--Jacket

The unity of philosophical experience by Etienne Gilson( Book )
66 editions published between 1937 and 2004 in 3 languages and held by 1,490 libraries worldwide
"It is the proper aim and scope of the present book to show that the history of philosophy makes philosophical sense, and to define its meaning in regard to the nature of philosophical knowledge itself. For that reason, the various doctrines, as well as the definite parts of those doctrines, which have been taken into account in this volume, should not be considered as arbitrarily selected fragments from some abridged description of medieval and modern philosophy, but as a series of concrete philosophical experiments especially chosen for their dogmatic significance. Each of them represents a definite attempt to deal with philosophical knowledge according to a certain method, and all of them, taken together, make up a philosophical experience. The fact that all those experiments have yielded the same result will, as I hope, justify the common conclusion ... that there is a centuries-long experience of what philosophical knowledge is--and that such an experience exhibits a remarkable unity." The philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas : authorised translation from the third revised & enlarged edition of 'Le thomisme' by Etienne Gilson( Book )
111 editions published between 1924 and 1993 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,313 libraries worldwide
The present revival of interest in the name and work of St. Thomas Aquinas is a fact which is bound to impress even the most superficial observer. In fact, nobody thinks of denying it; but, since it disturbs the set habits of some, the attempt has been made to give it an unfavourable interpretation in order to escape the duty to take an interest in it. It is - so it has been said - a merely artificial return to an obsolete scholasticism, a movement, political-religious rather than strictly philosophical; what has not been alleged and invented to explain a movement of ideas whose depth and vitality are sufficient to disprove so mean an origin!
Discourse on method, and Meditations by René Descartes( Book )
178 editions published between 1925 and 2011 in 5 languages and held by 1,135 libraries worldwide
Rene Descartes was a central figure in the scientific revolution of the seventeenth century. In his Discourse on Method he outlined the contrast between mathematics and experimental sciences, and the extent to which each one can achieve certainty. Drawing on his own work in geometry, optics, astronomy and physiology, Descartes developed the hypothetical method that characterizes modern science, and this soon came to replace the traditional techniques derived from Aristotle. Many of Descartes' most radical ideas such as the disparity between our perceptions and the realities that cause them have been highly influential in the development of modern philosophy. from (August 22, 2011)

Being and some philosophers by Etienne Gilson( Book )
56 editions published between 1949 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 1,103 libraries worldwide
The study of being was one of the main preoccupations of Gilson's scholarly and intellectual life. Being and Some Philosophers is at once a testament to the persistence of these concerns and an important landmark in the history of the question of being. The book charts the ways in which being is translated across history, from unity in Plato and substance in Aristotle to essence in Avicenna and the act of existence in Aquinas. It examines the vicissitudes of essence and existence in Suarez and Christian Wolff, in Hegel and Kierkegaard, in order to uncover the metaphysical and existential foundations of modern thought. And yet Being and Some Philosophers remains not so much an historical investigation (although it could only have been written by a scholar steeped in the history of philosophy) but, in the words of its author, "a philosophical book, and a dogmatically philosophical one at that." Its passionate vigour has proven, over many years, at once fresh and provocative. Indeed, the appendix to this revised edition contains critiques of the book by two Thomists as well as Gilson's replies to their objections
