Einstein's enigma, or, Black holes in my bubble bath by C. V Vishveshwara( Book )
49 editions published between 2006 and 2010 in English and Italian and held by 472 libraries worldwide
"Einstein's Enigma or Black Holes in My Bubble Bath is a humourous and informal rendition of the story of gravitation theory from the early historic origins to the latest developments in astrophysics, focusing on Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity and black-hole physics. Through engaging conversations and napkin-scribbled diagrams come tumbling the rudiments of relativity, spacetime and much of modern physics, narrated with high didactic and literary talent, and each embedded in casual lessons given by a worldly astrophysicist to his friend. Join the intellectual fun and exalt in the frothy ideas while vicariously taking relaxing baths in this magical bathtub. Prof. C.V. Vishveshwara is a renowned theoretical physicist, who participated in the golden age of black-hole physics, making pioneering contributions. Also an enthusiastic teacher and planetarium director, he has written several popular-level articles, scripts for planetarium shows and produced documentary movies on science."--Publisher's website

Gravitation, gauge theories and the early universe by B. R Iyer( Book )
7 editions published between 1988 and 1989 in English and held by 138 libraries worldwide
This book evolved out of some one hundred lectures given by twenty experts at a special instructional conference sponsored by the University Grants Commis sion, India. It is pedagogical in style and self-contained in several interrelated areas of physics which have become extremely important in present-day theoretical research. The articles begin with an introduction to general relativity and cosmology as well as particle physics and quantum field theory. This is followed by reviews of the standard gauge models of high-energy physics, renormalization group and grand unified theories. The concluding parts of the book comprise discussions in current research topics such as problems of the early universe, quantum cosmology and the new directions towards a unification of gravitation with other forces. In addition, special concise treatments of mathematical topics of direct relevance are also included. The content of the book was carefully worked out for the mutual education of students and research workers in general relativity and particle physics. This ambitious programe consequently necessitated the involvement of a number of different authors. However, care has been taken to ensure that the material meshes into a unified, cogent and readable book. We hope that the book will serve to initiate and guide a student in these different areas of investigation starting from first principles and leading to the exciting current research problems of an interdisciplinary nature in the context of the origin and structure of the universe
Black holes, gravitational radiation, and the universe : essays in honor of C.V. Vishveshwara by B. R Iyer( Book )
6 editions published between 1999 and 2011 in English and held by 93 libraries worldwide
This volume assesses research on black holes and gravitational radiation and their implications in understanding this mysterious universe. Thirty-two articles by experts of international standing weave separate threads into the majestic black hole tapestry and bring together a broad view of past achievements, current progress and future prospects. Pedagogic in nature, the volume is a tribute to C.V. Vishveshwara, whose pioneering contribution to studies of black holes is universally recognised. It leads the reader along the seemingly innocuous trail that began in the sixties, through today, to the future, and attempts to offer a grand panoramic view of black hole physics before the new millennium. Audience: This book will be of interest to research physicists and to mathematicians whose work involves relativity and gravitation, theoretical astrophysics, mathematical physics, active galactic nuclei, cosmology and data analysis
Geometry, fields and cosmology : techniques and applications by B. R Iyer( Book )
11 editions published between 1997 and 2011 in English and held by 85 libraries worldwide
This volume is based on the lectures given at the First Inter-University Graduate School on Gravitation and Cosmology organized by IUCAA, Pune, India. The material offers a firm mathematical foundation for a number of subjects including geometrical methods for physics, quantum field theory methods and relativistic cosmology. It brings together the most basic and widely used techniques of theoretical physics today. A number of specially selected problems with hints and solutions have been added to assist the reader in achieving mastery of the topics. Audience: The style of the book is pedagogical and should appeal to graduate students and research workers who are beginners in the study of gravitation and cosmology or related subjects such as differential geometry, quantum field theory and the mathematics of physics. This volume is also recommended as a textbook for courses or for self-study
Directions in general relativity : proceedings of the 1993 International Symposium, Maryland by B. L Hu( Book )
18 editions published between 1993 and 2005 in English and held by 58 libraries worldwide
These two volumes are the proceedings of a major International Symposium on General Relativity held at the University of Maryland 27 to 29 March 1993 to celebrate the sixtieth birthdays of Professor Charles Misner and Professor Dieter Brill. The volumes cover classical general relativity, quantum gravity and quantum cosmology, canonical formulation and the initial value problem, topology and geometry of spacetime and fields, mathematical and physical cosmology, and Black Hole physics and astrophysics. As invited articles, the papers in these volumes have an aim which goes beyond that of a standard conference proceedings. Not only do the authors discuss the most recent research results in their fields, but many also provide historical perspectives on how their subjects developed and offer individual insights in their search for new directions
Universe unveiled : the cosmos in my bubble bath by C. V Vishveshwara( Book )
11 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 24 libraries worldwide
Alfie is back. And so are George and other characters from the author's previous book Einstein's Enigma or Black Holes in My Bubble Bath. While the present book, Universe Unveiled - The Cosmos in My Bubble Bath, is completely independent, its storyline can be considered a sequel to the previous one. The scientific content spanning ancient world models to the most recent mysteries of cosmology is presented in an entirely nontechnical and descriptive style through the discussions between Alfie, the enlightened learner, and George, professor of astrophysics. Fantasies, based on these discussions that cover the scientific facts, are created by the magical bubble baths taken by Alfie. Universe Unveiled blends accurate science with philosophy, drama, humour, and fantasy to create an exciting cosmic journey that reads like a novel and educates as it entertains
