The Saint Louis and O'Fallon Coal Company Mine site was an abandoned site on the southern boundary of Fairview Heights, Illinois and the eastern perimeter of the Long Acre city park. In addition to the site serving as a source point for water pollution, the poorly maintained overflow structure for the dam had potential for flood damage. It constituted a dangerous, blighted presence in a landscape otherwise characterized by wooded, rolling terrain. The reclamation and park expansion had several notable results: removal of the source pollution, addition of baseball diamonds, and the introduction of grasses and trees, which in turn improved the sight environment considerably as well as providing natural pollution-consuming agents
