The roots of psychotherapy by Carl A Whitaker( Book )
28 editions published between 1953 and 2017 in English and held by 507 libraries worldwide
"This monograph proposes a scientific formulation of the art of psychotherapy. The recent recognition of this treatment process as a separate discipline makes imperative the understanding of its nature and the comprehension of those features common to all forms of psychotherapy, regardless of differences in technique or in school orientation. We are interested in providing a conceptual framework which will serve as a point of departure for the common effort to develop both research and the pragmatic aspects of psychotherapy. Much of the writing involves making explicit what is implicit in many previous formulations. The book is divided into three sections: (1) Foundation deals with the relationship of psychotherapy to general biology, especially to growth and adaptation, and with the common features as well as the differences in the major, approaches to psychotherapy; (2) Process presents a formulation of the essential phases and the dynamics of any psychotherapeutic relationship; and (3) Techniques presents some techniques which the authors have found useful in their own work as psychotherapists"--Preface. "In this training video, Carl Whitaker demonstrates Experiential Family Therapy with a family seeking treatment for their son's ADHD. Whitaker acts as a consultant to the therapist of a struggling family, presenting the essence of what he and a co-therapist would typically do. Arguing that the therapist must introduce stress to the family structure to enact change, Whitaker engages each family member in a pointed inquiry that challenges the system's established, intergenerational patterns. You will learn the major points of his approach, including focusing on the here and now, the series of therapeutic "battles" a clinician must win, and treating every session as both the first and the last in order to reduce therapeutic dependence and emphasize choice. Intended for students and practitioners in clinical psychology, counseling, social work, and related health professions."
