Treatise on tolerance by Voltaire( Book )
145 editions published between 1763 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 933 libraries worldwide
On March 10, 1762, Jean Calas, a Protestant merchant, was publicly executed in Toulouse, France. This punishment had been prescribed by the regional parliament, with hopes that Calas would confess to murdering his adult son in order to prevent his conversion to Catholicism. Steadfastly declaring his innocence, the elderly Huguenot expired after hours of suffering, his limbs broken one by one before the executioner strangled him and burned his corpse. These were the events that inspired Voltaire's Treatise on Tolerance. Even today the Treatise on Tolerance stands as one of the most important milestones in the acceptance of religious tolerance in the Western world
Russia under Peter the Great by Voltaire( Book )
213 editions published between 1759 and 2015 in 7 languages and held by 846 libraries worldwide
French Enlightenment thinker Voltaire saw much to admire in Russian emperor Peter the Great. Most significantly, Voltaire admired Peter's tireless efforts to drag Russia from its medieval mindset and thrust it into an age of rationality. This exhaustive biography focuses more on Peter's philosophy and values than his wartime exploits
Candide and other stories by Voltaire( Book )
21 editions published between 1966 and 2009 in English and held by 800 libraries worldwide
The spirit of satire flourished during the Enlightenment as in no other period, and the crowning achievement of that caustic, brilliantly learned age was Voltaire's Candide, published in 1759, at the height of its author's enormous European fame. Following the worldwide encounters - with shipwrecks, earthquakes, pestilence, and human insanity - of its hero and his incomparably absurd tutor, Dr. Pangloss, Candide is the most entertaining of all philosophical novels and the most philosophical of entertainments

Zadig; or, The book of fate by Voltaire( Book )
29 editions published between 1749 and 2012 in English and held by 172 libraries worldwide
Zadig or, The Book of Fate is both a novel and a work of philosophical fiction. Presenting life as in the control of destiny beyond any human control, the book presents questions about religion and the metaphysical. Because of its elaborate and skillful use of juxtaposition, contradiction and form, it is considered Voltaire's most celebrated work after Candide. The work tells the story of Zadig, a philosopher in ancient Babylonia who finds himself in love with women who always seem to be involved in other relationships. One such woman is the Queen of Babylon, Astarte. In his adventures to woo and ultimately marry the queen despite her being married to the King of Babylon, Zadig encounters various people and solves their problems. While walking along the river Euphrates, Zadig happens upon a hermit reading the Book of Destinies, learns that his helping others has left him in Fate's good favor, and is given the answers to win over the queen and defeat her husband in the famous Enigma challenge
The portable Voltaire by Voltaire( Book )
13 editions published between 1949 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 63 libraries worldwide
"The Portable Voltaire" is an excellent compendium of the major works of the man who became the most famous iconoclast of the French Enlightenment. One of the attractions of this particular volume is the introduction by Ben Ray Redman, who delivers with witty, flowing prose an extremely interesting short biography and a summary of the man's philosophy. Normally I don't bother to mention a book's introduction in a review, but Redman's is so good I make a notable exception. Voltaire was a man of contrasts. He was sickly and feeble but miraculously managed to extend his lifespan to eighty-four years, travel abroad, and survive in prison; he was made wealthy by various benefactors and seemed generally happy but could be very cynical and antagonistic in his writing; and most notoriously, he was a deist whose hatred of Christianity could make him appear to be an atheist. Most of what he hated about Christianity was the clergy--their hypocrisy, their adherence to practices he found absurd, their conceit that everything in the universe is made exclusively for man's consumption and amusement--and the superstition and fanaticism exhibited by the more extreme practitioners of the faith. -- from http://www.amazon.com (June 16, 2014)
