The city of God by Augustine( Book )
1,103 editions published between 1314 and 2014 in 13 languages and held by 8,938 libraries worldwide
Saint Augustine is often regardarded as the most influential Christian thinker after Saint Paul, and City of God is his materpiece, a cast synthesis of religious and secular knowledge. It began as a reply to the charge that Christian otherworldiness was causing the decline of the Roman Empire. Augustine produced a wealth of evidence to prove that paganism bore within itself the seeds of its own destruction. Then he proceeded to his larger theme, a cosmic interpretation of in terms of the struggle between good and evilL the City of God in conflict with the Earthly City or the City of the Devil. This, the first serious attempt at a philosophy of history, was to have incalculable influence in forming the Western mind on the relations of church and state, and on the Christianʹs place in the temporal order. -- Description from http://www.amazon.co.uk/ (Dec. 10, 2012)
The Confessions of St. Augustine by Augustine( Book )
905 editions published between 1470 and 2016 in 12 languages and held by 3,709 libraries worldwide
Augustine was one of the most remarkable figures of the early Christian church. Born in North Afirca in AD 354, the son of a pagan farmer, he rose to become Bishop of Hippo and a hugely influential Christian writer. The extracts have been chosen to express Augustine's wisdom and his mystical yearning for God; at the same time they tell the story of his dissolute youth, his ascent to the imperial court in Milan and his conversion to Christianity at the age of thirty-two
On Christian doctrine by Augustine( Book )
186 editions published between 1480 and 2013 in 9 languages and held by 2,742 libraries worldwide
"This translation of St. Augustine's De doctrina Christiania is based on the Benedictine text. Quotations from the Bible appear in the Douay-Rheims version, but the footnotes contain reference in brackets to indicate the location of corresponding verses in the King James Bible where the Bible contains the same material arranged according to a different system. Essentially, On Christian Doctrine is an introduction to the interpretation and explanation of the Bible."--Translator's preface and introduction
On free choice of the will by Augustine( Book )
96 editions published between 1491 and 2011 in 7 languages and held by 2,109 libraries worldwide
"Translated with an uncanny sense for the overall point of Augustine's doctrine. In short, a very good translation. The Introduction is admirably clear."--Paul Vincent Spade, Indiana University
The teacher. The free choice of the will. Grace and free will by Augustine( Book )
139 editions published between 1921 and 2012 in 10 languages and held by 1,904 libraries worldwide
Faith, hope and charity by Augustine( Book )
110 editions published between 1467 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 1,806 libraries worldwide
This work was written by St. Augustine late in his life with the intention of supplying a well-educated Roman layman with a brief but comprehensive exposition of the essential teachings of Christianity. It contains many of his most profound and mature definitions of his thoughts on sin, grace and predestination, and is regarded as an indispensable guide to Augustinian Christianity

Contents: The Confessions of St. Augustine, with introduction, and notes
The Trinity by Hilary( Book )
94 editions published between 1471 and 2016 in 5 languages and held by 1,212 libraries worldwide
Augustine knows by faith that God is a trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and he is seeking as far as possible to understand what he believes. In the first seven books Augustine begins by searching the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments for clues to understanding and then argues in the language of philosophy and logic to defend the orthodox statement of the doctrine against the Arians. In the last eight books Augustine seeks to understand the mystery of the divine Trinity by observing an analogous trinity in the image of God, which is the human mind; and in so doing, he also suggests a program for the serious Christian of spiritual self-discovery and renewal. This second edition is newly produced, now featuring convenient footnotes rather than the previously used endnotes
Political writings by Augustine( Book )
20 editions published between 1994 and 2007 in English and held by 720 libraries worldwide
This collection brings together thirty-five letters and sermons of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo from 396-430 AD, that deal with political matters. The letters and sermons are both practical and principled and treat many essential themes in Augustine's thought, including the responsibilities of citizenship, the relationship between the church and secular authority, religious coercion, and war and peace. These texts complement Augustine's classic The City of God, and give students direct insight into the political and social world of late antiquity with which Augustine was immediately involved

Four anti-Pelagian writings by Augustine( Book )
16 editions published between 1992 and 2001 in English and held by 633 libraries worldwide
"This volume brings together writings from early and late stages of Augustine's involvement in the Pelagian controversy. On Nature and Grace and on the Proceedings of Pelagius both date from A.D. 415-16 and constitute two of Augustine's most extensive treatments of the actual words of Pelagius. On the Predestination of the Saints and On the Gift of Perseverance were written in A.D. 428, near the end of Augustine's life. Augustine's opponents in his writings, he admits, are not really Pelagians at all. They were monks of Provence, led by John Cassian, who were disturbed by the more extreme consequences of the theology of grace and predestination that Augustine had worked out in his controversy with the Pelagians. Since the sixteenth century, they have been labeled "semi-Pelagians."" "Taken together, these writings provide an occasion to examine the continuity and development of Augustine's theology of grace. They also afford much insight into the fifth-century status of many theological questions that are alive today, such as the extent of the damage done to human nature by sin, the theology of original sin, the effects of baptism, and the true meaning and scope of God's salvific will." "These treatises include some of Augustine's most significant statements on grace. Intended for scholars and students of theology and philosophy, this edition includes three treatises translated for the first time since the nineteenth century, two of which are the first from modern critical texts. William Collinge's trenchant introductions offer detailed accounts of the historical and critical work done over the hundred years since the last publication."--Jacket

On the Trinity by Augustine( Book )
