"Throughout his life, J.M.W. Turner was fascinated by Oxford, 'the English Athens'. Indeed, no other place in England so consistently engaged his attention over so long a period, from the beginning of his career until the late 1830s. This book brings together for the first time all his views of the city, and discusses the circumstances surrounding the genesis of these works. They range from watercolours done by the teenage artist while staying with relations at the nearby village of Sunningwell, in Berkshire; numerous drawings and watercolours of the 1790s made for collectors and for private pleasure and instruction; ten watercolours commissioned for the Oxford Almanack between 1799 and 1804; two oil paintings for the Oxford dealer, James Wyatt in 1809-12; and the preparatory works and finished watercolours for several projects in the 1820s and 1830s, when Turner was at the height of his powers."--Jacket

The drawings of Michelangelo and his followers in the Ashmolean Museum by Paul Joannides( Book )
5 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 190 libraries worldwide
This volume comprises the fullest and most detailed catalogue of the drawings by and after Michelangelo in the Ashmolean Museum. It is one of the most important collections of drawings by this artist, which also includes drawings after his own by contemporaries that shed light on lost works as well as the artist's reputation and influence during the sixteenth century. The introduction provides a history of Michelangelo's drawings generally and also surveys the various types of drawing practised by Michelangelo and an account of his development as a draughtsman. Most of the drawings in the Ashmolean Museum came from the collection of Sir Thomas Lawrence, and this book contains a detailed appendix that traces the histories of all of the drawings by or after Michelangelo that Lawrence owned, both before he acquired them and after they were dispersed
