For Verdi fans, this performance of his dark, magnificent opera is something of a touchstone. James Levine knows just how to bring all the elements in this sprawling canvas together in one gripping picture. The legendary Leontyne Price is spectacular as Leonora, desperately in love with Alvaro (Plácido Domingo at his most incandescent), even after fate wrenches them apart. Cornell MacNeil is Don Carlo, Leonora's vengeful brother, and Martti Talvela is the compassionate Padre Guardiano

But who would believe the best friend of the king would actually murder him? Absurd. That's what the king (Jan Peerce) thinks. But he loves Amelia (Zinka Milanov), the wife of his friend Renato (Robert Merrill). And when Renato discovers them together, he joins the plot against the king. This is Verdian passion at its best

Plácido Domingo (Samson) and Denyce Graves (Dalila) give a searing demonstration of "onstage chemistry." Certainly no one could possibly doubt that this Samson and Dalila were fated to be together, regardless of all the obstacles put in their way. Graves's sultry, come-hither voice perfectly complements Domingo's honeyed tenor. With Sergei Leiferkus's authoritative High Priest

This book was produced for Placido Domingo's 60th birthday and the 40th anniversary of his debut in a major role (Alfredo in La Traviata in 1961). It is a portrait of the artist in his own words, through his own portrayals of the various operatic heroes he has so grippingly and hauntingly brought to life over the years. The series of interviews took place all over the world over several years, from Seville to New York to Vienna and home in Acapulco. They trace his journey into each of his 62 major roles for the benefit of present and future singers, to single out the specific vocal aspects in each role that he considers significant. - Author's note
