Violin concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach( Sound Recording )
50 editions published between 1984 and 2008 in 6 languages and held by 1,144 libraries worldwide
The Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn concertos both have played a significant role in Ray Chen's career. His superb performance of the works led to his triumph at two major violin competitions: the 2008 Yehudi Menuhin Competition and first prize in the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels a year later. Chen brings a fresh interpretation to the cornerstones of violin repertoire and finds a kindred spirit in conductor Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra
Piano concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart( file )
16 editions published between 1968 and 2007 in No Linguistic Content and Undetermined and held by 1,140 libraries worldwide
Anna Vinnitskaya has now joined Alpha Classics. Her first recording for the label is devoted to one of her repertories of choice: the concertos of Shostakovich.'When I performed the Second Piano Concerto for the first time at the age of eleven, his music seemed very optimistic to me. Only later did I understand everything else that is concealed behind the "façade" of Shostakovich's music.'[The Russian pianist reveals two facets of the composer's music on this disc by juxtaposing the First Piano Concerto in C minor op. 35, an 'insolent' composition with a kaleidoscope of atmospheres and stylistic registers (Russian Romanticism, American jazz, neoclassicism) that constantly surprise the listener, and the more traditional Concerto in F major, which radiates youthful high spirits.] A pupil of Sergey Ossipenko at the Serge Rachmaninoff Conservatory, then of the great Evgeni Koroliov at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg, Anna Vinnitskaya won the Leonard Bernstein Prize, but it was her First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2007 that launched her career. For this recording, Anna Vinnitskaya is surrounded by partners of the front rank: the famous Kremerata Baltica, regarded as one of the most creative ensembles on today's musical scene, and the prestigious wind players of the Staatskapelle Dresden

I vespri siciliani : [opera in 5 acts] by Giuseppe Verdi( Sound Recording )
40 editions published between 1973 and 1999 in 5 languages and held by 880 libraries worldwide
Verdi's gripping tale of Sicilians rising against the occupying French stars Renata Scotto in her only broadcast of this rarely heard masterpiece. From the beginning of the opera, when Elena (Scotto) sings an "innocent" song fanning the people's resentment against the foreign army, to the end, when the ringing of her wedding bells signals the start of the revolt, Scotto's artistry blazes. James Levine leads the Met Orchestra and Chorus in a wonderfully idiomatic performance, and Ruggero Raimondi is magnificent as Procida, the outlawed Sicilian leader

With deadly new tanks, fresh troops and a cunning commander, the Third Reich was about to make one last vicious assault that could easily turn the tide of World War II and perhaps history

Thaïs by Jules Massenet( Sound Recording )
28 editions published between 1970 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 725 libraries worldwide
Take one ascetic monk named Athanaël and one ravishingly beautiful courtesan named Thaïs, add Massenet's sensual, melodious music, with equal dashes of eroticism and religious fervor--and you have a powerful opera that is at once a celebration of the sacred and the profane, of flesh and soul. This rarity had not been heard at the Met for almost 40 years when it was brought back as a vehicle for the great soprano Beverly Sills and the magnetic singing actor Sherrill Milnes. Together, they masterfully bring to life the searing conflict at the heart of the drama

When she learns that des Grieux, desperate she has left him, is about to take holy orders, she changes her mind--but it is too late, and their love story ends in tragedy
