The renewal of pagan antiquity : contributions to the cultural history of the European Renaissance by Aby Warburg( Book )
39 editions published between 1932 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 652 libraries worldwide
A collection of essays by the art historian Aby Warburg, these essays look beyond iconography to more psychological aspects of artistic creation: the conditions under which art was practised; its social and cultural contexts; and its conceivable historical meaning
Images from the region of the Pueblo Indians of North America by Aby Warburg( Book )
18 editions published between 1995 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 390 libraries worldwide
As an independent scholar in Hamburg, Warburg led the intellectual circle that included Erwin Panofsky and Ernst Cassirer, pioneers in the investigation of cultural history through the analysis of visual art and the interpretation of symbols. When Warburg wrote this exposition, however, he was a mental patient in a Kreuzlingen sanatorium. Warburg's vulnerable state of mind lends urgency and passion to his discussion of human rationality and cultural demons
Photographs at the frontier : Aby Warburg in America 1895-1896 by Nicholas Mann( Book )
6 editions published in 1998 in English and Italian and held by 280 libraries worldwide
"Aby Warburg (1866-1929) belongs to the elite group of scholars and thinkers maturing at the turn of the nineteenth century who shaped the directions to be taken in the following hundred years. He is known not simply for his pioneering scholarship of Italian Renaissance art and culture, but for the totality of his approach, the interest he took in the whole process of what anthropologists now call symbolization, the creation of symbols by societies to represent their world. This book studies a crucial moment in his development, when, in 1895, diverted from his projected studies in Italy, he crossed to New York to attend his brother's wedding, then, encouraged by the contacts he had made with scholars of the Smithsonian Institution, made a trip deep into the Arizona desert to study Hopi culture at first hand. There is no doubt that this anthropological venture, though he did not formulate his thoughts about it on paper until much later, in a lecture of 1923, both reflected and helped to form an approach to the Italian Renaissance that was to revolutionize twentieth-century attitudes to culture. Warburg took photographs documenting the significant stages along his journey, which today make moving and instructive visual accounts of life in the American Southwest, both Western and native. The few images Warburg himself selected to illustrate his lecture of 1923 have long been known, but the remainder of the collection have only recently been gathered together. Reproduced, annotated and catalogued in this book for the first time, these photographs offer a timely opportunity to look not only at precious records of the growing western cities and of the Hopi as they lived a century ago, but the evolution of Warburg's thought and at his relationships with other scholars and with American anthropologists such as James Mooney and Frank H. Cushing. Leading scholars in their field have contributed the six essays in this volume, published in association with the Warburg Institute, London, and introduced by its director, Nicholas Mann. This important book also includes relevant excerpts from Warburg's unpublished diaries, and reproduces more than one hundred of his photographs and drawings."--Publisher's description

Aby Warburg and the image in motion by Philippe-Alain Michaud( Book )
9 editions published between 1998 and 2012 in French and held by 93 libraries worldwide
"Aby Warburg (1866-1929) is best known as the originator of the discipline of iconology and as the founder of the institute that bears his name. His followers included such celebrated art historians of the twentieth century such as Erwin Panofsky, Edgar Wind, and Fritz Saxl. But his heirs developed, for the most part, a domesticated iconology based on the decipherment and interpretation of symbolic material. As Phillippe-Alain Michaud demonstrates in this important book, Warburg's project was remote from any positivist or neo-Kantian ambitions. Nourished on the work of Nietzsche and Jacob Burckhardt, Warburg fashioned a "critical iconology" to reveal the irrationality of the image in Western culture." "Michaud provides us with a book not only about Warburg but one that extends his intuitions and discoveries into analyses of other categories of imagery like the Daguerreotype, the chronophotography of Etienne-Jules Marey, early cinema, and the dances of Loie Fuller. This edition also includes a foreword by Georges Didi-Huberman and texts by Warburg not previously translated into English."--BOOK JACKET

The individual and the cosmos in Renaissance philosophy by Ernst Cassirer( Book )
4 editions published between 1963 and 1977 in German and Multiple languages and held by 81 libraries worldwide
"This provocative volume, one of the most important interpretive works on the philosophical thought of the Renaissance, has long been regarded as a classic in its field. Ernst Cassirer here examines the changes brewing in the early stages of the Renaissance, tracing the interdependence of philosophy, language, art, and science; the newfound recognition of individual consciousness; and the great thinkers of the period - from da Vinci and Galileo to Pico della Mirandola and Giordano Bruno. The Individual and the Cosmos in Renaissance Philosophy discusses the importance of fifteenth-century philosopher Nicholas Cusanus, the concepts of freedom and necessity, and the subject-object problem in Renaissance thought."--Pub. desc

La guérison infinie : histoire clinique d'Aby Warburg by Ludwig Binswanger( Book )
7 editions published between 2006 and 2011 in French and held by 61 libraries worldwide
