Messiah by George Frideric Handel( Sound Recording )
47 editions published between 1954 and 2013 in English and No Linguistic Content and held by 870 libraries worldwide
The German conductor Hermann Scherchen (1891-1966) recorded Handel's Messiah twice: his first recording, which is presented (by the way, it was the first uncut release of the work), was made with an English case in September 1953, a second version in stereo was recorded in Vienna during April 1959 with an international cast including Pierrette Alarie, Nan Merriman, Leopold Simoneau and again Richard Standen. The earlier recording is generally regarded as the finer one. Scherchen's unpretentious and transparent sound together with an often unusual choice of tempos was a sensation at the time the recording was released and still convincing today
