Otello by Giuseppe Verdi( Sound Recording )

The story: Act I. The action unfolds on Cyprus, under Venetian rule in the 16th century. The scene is outside the castle, residence of Otello, governor of the island, facing the port. It is night. A furious storm churns the sea, and a crowd of Venetian citizens and soldiers helplessly watch while the ship of the Moor Otello desperately tries to make it into port. Only Iago, one of Otello's men, does not participate in the general apprehension for the safety of his leader: he hates Otello, because Otello has promoted Cassio captain instead of him; he meditates revenge. The crowd is jubilant as Otello finally lands safely and announces that the Turkish fleet has been defeated. When the Moor enters the castle, the fireworks start and all drink to his victory. In the midst of the rejoicing, Iago starts to weave the scheme that will lead to his commander's downfall: he treacherously insinuates to Roderigo, who had revealed to Iago his love for Otello's wife, Desdemona, that Captain Cassio also feels the same affection for the woman. Then Iago gets Cassio drunk, and incites a fight between the two men, but the dangerous duel that starts between them is stopped by Montano. However, the peacemaker is wounded by Cassio. Iago sounds the alarm, swelling the episode out of proportion until the crowd is in tumult. Called back by the shouts and noise, Otello, falsely informed by Iago, punishes Cassio and demotes him. This is a first victory for Iago, who exults

Il trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi( Sound Recording )
75 editions published between 1970 and 2013 in 7 languages and held by 1,231 libraries worldwide
Verdi's beloved opera overflows with marvelous arias, ensembles, and choruses--all superbly sung by this all-star cast, under the direction of James Levine. Aprile Millo (Leonore) is in love with the mysterious troubadour Manrico (Luciano Pavarotti) but the nefarious Count Di Luna (Sherrill Milnes) wants her for himself. Add to the roiling drama the mysterious old gypsy Azucena (the intense Fiorenza Cossotto in her final Met performance), and it's a situation that is disastrous for the characters--though it inspired some of the best-known music in all of Italian opera
Macbeth by Giuseppe Verdi( file )
82 editions published between 1970 and 2016 in 6 languages and held by 1,151 libraries worldwide
Verdi's crackling version of Shakespeare's monumental play attracts singers and conductors who are willing to take risks in pursuit of drama. With James Levine's taut conducting, the dimensions and colors of Verdi's score are revealed, galvanizing Sherrill Milnes (Macbeth) and Renata Scotto (Lady Macbeth). Milnes's strong baritone gives imposing dimensions to Macbeth, and the way Scotto combines the words with the music demonstrates why some people say Lady Macbeth is really the leading character

Verdi painted an immense canvas with this dark but tuneful opera. The legendary Leontyne Price is seen in one of her greatest roles, Leonora. Price's soaring voice encompasses every nuance of Leonora's emotion as she moves from joy through resignation to ultimate heartbreak. James Levine's brilliant leading of the Met orchestra and chorus is a lesson in Verdi style. Giuseppe Giacomini is Alvaro, the man Leonora loves, and Leo Nucci is Don Carlo, the dark instrument of their Fate

I vespri siciliani by Giuseppe Verdi( file )
58 editions published between 1973 and 2009 in 7 languages and held by 984 libraries worldwide
This astonishing cast introduced Vespri to Met audiences only a few weeks before this broadcast and opera lovers fought for tickets to hear in person what all the excitement was about. James Levine's conducting was as passionate as it was authoritative, and the singers responded with performances that are still talked about with awe. Montserrat Caballé is lustrous as Elena, the young woman whose marriage to Arrigo (Nicolai Gedda) ignites a bloodbath. Sherrill Milnes is in top form as Monforte, the hated oppressor, who turns out to be much more than he seems

Giordano's gripping drama of love and politics at the time of the French Revolution demands larger-than-life performances, and the stellar lineup of artists in this broadcast delivers: Baritone Sherrill Milnes (celebrating his 25th Met anniversary with this appearance) is sensational as the servant-turned-revolutionary Gérard. Tenor Nicola Martinucci gives a powerful account of the title role, the poet Andrea Chénier. The two men are rivals for the love of Maddalena, sung with passion and charisma by Aprile Millo. Julius Rudel conducts
