The Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn concertos both have played a significant role in Ray Chen's career. His superb performance of the works led to his triumph at two major violin competitions: the 2008 Yehudi Menuhin Competition and first prize in the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels a year later. Chen brings a fresh interpretation to the cornerstones of violin repertoire and finds a kindred spirit in conductor Daniel Harding and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra

91 editions published between 1964 and 2013 in 7 languages and held by 1,180 libraries worldwide
The Dresden Staatskapelle has a very special tradition of performing Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It performed the then still highly controversial work for the first time in August 1838 under the baton of Johann Gottlieb Reissiger. Since 1900, the piece has been performed yearly on Palm Sunday, having been popularized by Richard Wagner in 1843
La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini( Sound Recording )

Musical excerpts drawn from Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème (London 421 049-2) with descriptive narration by Robert Lyall, to promote the upcoming production of the opera on February 11 & 12, 2005 by Opera Grand Rapids in De Vos Hall
Pelléas et Mélisande by Claude Debussy( Sound Recording )
51 editions published between 1974 and 2009 in 6 languages and held by 1,124 libraries worldwide
Star conductor Simon Rattle leads a superb cast in this mesmerizing performance of Debussy's rarely staged opera. Stéphane Degout and Magdalena Kožená are the tragic title couple--lovers caught in a web of passion as strong as it is forbidden. Gerald Finley delivers a remarkable portrayal of Golaud, Mélisande's husband and Pelléas's half-brother, and Felicity Palmer is their mother, Geneviève. Willard White brings dramatic and vocal intensity to the brief but crucial role of the blind old king Arkel
Piano concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart( Sound Recording )
62 editions published between 1953 and 2015 in 7 languages and held by 1,116 libraries worldwide
Anna Vinnitskaya has now joined Alpha Classics. Her first recording for the label is devoted to one of her repertories of choice: the concertos of Shostakovich.'When I performed the Second Piano Concerto for the first time at the age of eleven, his music seemed very optimistic to me. Only later did I understand everything else that is concealed behind the "façade" of Shostakovich's music.'[The Russian pianist reveals two facets of the composer's music on this disc by juxtaposing the First Piano Concerto in C minor op. 35, an 'insolent' composition with a kaleidoscope of atmospheres and stylistic registers (Russian Romanticism, American jazz, neoclassicism) that constantly surprise the listener, and the more traditional Concerto in F major, which radiates youthful high spirits.] A pupil of Sergey Ossipenko at the Serge Rachmaninoff Conservatory, then of the great Evgeni Koroliov at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg, Anna Vinnitskaya won the Leonard Bernstein Prize, but it was her First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2007 that launched her career. For this recording, Anna Vinnitskaya is surrounded by partners of the front rank: the famous Kremerata Baltica, regarded as one of the most creative ensembles on today's musical scene, and the prestigious wind players of the Staatskapelle Dresden
Der Freischutz by Carl Maria von Weber( Sound Recording )
84 editions published between 1937 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 1,089 libraries worldwide
Wagner said this early-Romantic gem was the most German of German operas. Its irresistible mix of colorful folklore, the spooky supernatural, a tender romance, and the passionate struggle between good and evil are all captured in Weber's tuneful and dramatic score. The cast in this rare U.S. performance is sensational: Sándor Kónya as our hero, the forester Max, who must win a shooting contest in order to marry his beloved Agathe (the ravishing Pilar Lorengar), despite the dark plotting of Caspar (Gerd Feldhoff)

Parsifal : [ein Bühnenweihfestspiel] by Richard Wagner( Sound Recording )
58 editions published between 1970 and 2016 in 5 languages and held by 908 libraries worldwide
Wagner's mystical opera makes extraordinary demands on the conductor, but James Levine is renowned for the special affection and authority he brings to this transcendent work. The music shimmers and glows, evoking the legendary world of the Knights of the Holy Grail and the pure fool who brings healing power to the land. Peter Hofmann stars as the questing title hero, Jerome Hines sings the wise old man, Gurnemanz, and Mignon Dunn is the voluptuous Kundry, whose erotic temptations almost ensnare the young hero

Die Schöpfung by Joseph Haydn( Sound Recording )
103 editions published between 1956 and 2012 in 7 languages and held by 845 libraries worldwide
Haydn gave birth to a new type of oratorio that reflected perfectly the spirit of his time. With German texts, direct expression of feelings and many grand choruses, it stood for the transition from the aristocracy to a bourgeois society, in which music-making in a group was seen as an expression of civil pride. Extremely popular with amateur choirs, performances with a large ensemble became the rule until well into the 20th century. And the 1960 Electrola recording represents this tradition, with a top-class trio of soloists consisting of the great Elisabeth Grummer, outstanding tenor Josef Traxel and Gottlob Frick, "the blackest of all bass singers"
