The Nasirean ethics by Naṣīr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Ṭūsī( Book )
99 editions published between 1316 and 2014 in 9 languages and held by 388 libraries worldwide
The Nasirean Ethics is the best known ethical digest to be composed in medieval Persia, if not in all mediaeval Islam. It appeared initially in 633/1235 when Tūsī was already a celebrated scholar, scientist, politico-religious propagandist. The work has a special significance as being composed by an outstanding figure at a crucial time in the history he was himself helping to shape: some twenty years later Tūsī was to cross the greatest psychological watershed in Islamic civilization, playing a leading part in the capture of Baghdad and the extinction of the generally acknowledged Caliphate there. In this work the author is primarily concerned with the criteria of human behaviour: first in terms of space and priority allotted, at the individual level, secondly, at the economic level and thirdly at the political level

Paradise of submission : a medieval treatise on Ismaili thought by Naṣīr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Ṭūsī( Book )
8 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 153 libraries worldwide
"Paradise of Submission (Rawda-yi taslim), is Tusi's most important and comprehensive Ismaili work. It consists of 27 chapters called tasawwurat (meaning 'reflections' or 'representations') on a variety of themes such as the Creator and the cosmos, the nature of human existence, ethics and human relations, religion, eschatology, prophethood and imamate. Additionally, there are chapters on the varieties of human knowledge, the nature of language, different forms of worship, and the soul's progression from corporeality to spirituality." "The significance of this treatise arises not only from its comprehensive treatment of medieval Ismaili thought, with its characteristic synthesis of theology, philosophy and esotericism, but also from its unique status as the only major doctrinal work of the early Nizari Ismailis to have survived the Mongol invasions of Iran in the 7th/13th century." "This new Persian edition and complete English translation of the Rawda-yi taslim has been prepared by S.J. Badakhchani on the basis of several known as well as recently discovered manuscripts of the text, and accompanied with an introductory essay by Hermann Landolt and a philosophical commentary by Christian Jambet."--Jacket
Shi'i interpretations of Islam : three treatises on Islamic theology and eschatology by Naṣīr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Ṭūsī( Book )
7 editions published in 2010 in English and Multiple languages and held by 122 libraries worldwide
One of the most prominent Muslim scholars and scientists of the medieval era, the Persian polymath Nasir al-Din Tusi (1201-1274) joined the Shiʹa Nizari Ismaili community at a young age, as the armies of Genghis Khan poured across his homeland. In the course of a long and eminent career, first under the patronage of the Ismailis at the fortress of Alamut, and later with the conquering Mongols, he produced over 150 works on diverse subjects from theology and philosophy to mathematics and astronomy. His principal works on Ismaili doctrine, the Rawda-yi taslim (The Paradise of Submission) and the autobiographical Sayr wa suluk (Contemplation and Action), are already available in English translation by S.J. Badakhchani. In this volume, he offers new critical editions and translations of three shorter Ismaili works by Tusi, namely Aghaz wa anjam (The Beginning and the End), Tawalla wa tabarra (Solidarity and Dissociation), and Matlub al-muʹminin (Desideratum of the Faithful). In these three treatises, Tusi provides concise interpretations of key motifs in Ismaili doctrine, with special reference to the primordial nature of man, his earthly existence in relation to the imam, and his destiny in the hereafter. -- Book jacket
The sultan's sex potions : Arab aphrodisiacs in the Middle Ages by Naṣīr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Ṭūsī( Book )
4 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 85 libraries worldwide
Arabic erotic literature has a long and rich history, which goes back as far as the ninth century. Far from being the pursuit of prurient pornographers, eroticism and sexuality received considerable attention from established scholars. Written by Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (1201-1274), one of the leading scientists of the age, The Sultan's Sex Potions is part of a group of works devoted to aphrodisiacs as well as sexual stimulants, practices and positions. Sober and measured in tone, the work was intended to be a manual that would allow the patient to dispense with the services of a physician. Its potions, electuaries, syrups and enemas enjoyed a 'royal warrant of appointment' to arouse the lust for coitus and enhance sexual potency. This volume includes a critical edition of three manuscripts, both in English and Arabic, as well as an introduction to Arabic erotic literature, a biography of the author, a blibliography of Arabic erotic works and extensive indexes
Recherches sur l'histoire de l'astronomie ancienne by Paul Tannery( Book )
4 editions published in 1893 in French and held by 70 libraries worldwide
The French mathematician and historian of science Paul Tannery (1843-1904) worked as an administrator in the state tobacco industry while researching and publishing on a wide variety of topics, including editions of Fermat and Descartes as well as of the Greek mathematician Diophantus of Alexandria. This 1893 work reviews the history of ancient Greek astronomy, beginning with a survey of what the Greeks actually meant by the use of the terms 'astronomy' and 'astrology', and going on to consider the work of Pythagoras and the other pre-Socratics, Aristotle and the Alexandrian mathematicians. At its core is a detailed analysis of Claudius Ptolemy's Almagest, which attempts to trace each of the Greek master's theories - on the sphericity and circumference of the earth, on the sun, moon and planets, and on the prediction of eclipses - back to its historical origins in Greek mathematical and philosophical thought
