Die USA waren noch nicht in den Zweiten Weltkrieg eingetreten, als Chaplin sich bereits mit seiner Comedy-Munition auf den "Führer" einschoss: In seiner Doppelrolle spielt er sowohl den an Hitler angelehnten Adenoid Hynkel als auch einen jüdischen Friseur, der dem irren Tyrannen wie ein Zwilling gleicht. Mit Wortspielen, optischen Gags und Slapstick nimmt Chaplin den Faschismus aufs Korn, stellt aber seinen Attacken auch ergreifende Szenen im von Sturmtruppen terrorisierten Ghetto gegenüber. Zu den unvergesslichen Momenten zählen Hynkels machttrunkener Tanz mit dem Globus, der Kopfüber-Flug sowie Hynkel und Jack Oakie als Mussolini-Alter-Ego, die beide wie wahnsinnig ihre Friseurstühle höher kurbeln
