Women, men and language : a sociolinguistic account of sex differences in language by Jennifer Coates( Book )
94 editions published between 1986 and 2016 in English and held by 1,703 libraries worldwide
Women, Men and Language is an essential introduction to the key area of language and gender. It sketches the historical background, summarises recent research and introduces students to the key issues in the field using an unpretentious and clear style. The book takes the reader from an initial 'men talk like this; women talk like that' approach to a more nuanced idea of women and men performing gender in their everyday interactions. It covers a range of sociolinguistic research, looking at grammatical and phonological features a well as at aspects of conversation such as compliments or swearing, and the growing use of the word 'like' by younger speakers. This updated third edition concludes with a new chapter summarising new developments and assessing possible future trends for the area
Language and gender : a reader by Jennifer Coates( Book )
43 editions published between 1997 and 2011 in English and held by 862 libraries worldwide
The volume is divided into ten sections exploring gender differences in pronunciation and grammar and in conversational practice; power and dominance in mixed-sex talk; same-sex talk; talk in the public domain; and debates on gender and power and on difference or dominance. There are two new sections - on language, gender, and sexuality, and on debates around the relevance of gender in the analysis of spoken interaction. The Reader concludes by discussing new directions in language and gender research, including the concept of the Community of Practice, the significance of gender and language ideologies, and the influence of social constructionism on the field. The editors have kept the strongest features of the previous edition, while adding twenty-three new and important pieces to the collection

Women talk : conversation between women friends by Jennifer Coates( Book )
19 editions published between 1988 and 2004 in English and held by 523 libraries worldwide
Women's talk is trivial and unimportant. That is the age-old myth which this book debunks. Jennifer Coates explores conversations between women friends to reveal the richness and complexity of the language they use. Like musicians jamming, women friends use language to mirror, balance and echo each other as they share experiences, discuss social questions and explore personal issues. For women, exchange and support are basic to their ideas of friendship - and this culture of sharing is evident both in the language they use and in the way their conversation is organised. For those with an interest in language, this book is the most detailed depiction yet published of how women use language in talking to each other and how it differs from other kinds of talk. For feminist readers, it offers a remarkable insight into women's experiences, their friendships and the crucial role language plays in building and maintaining those friendships
Men talk : stories in the making of masculinities by Jennifer Coates( Book )
24 editions published between 2003 and 2008 in English and held by 453 libraries worldwide
"Men Talk draws on rich conversational material from a wide range of contexts to answer these questions and illuminate our understanding of men and masculinities at the turn of the millennium. Coates examines spontaneous conversations involving all-male groups, ranging from garage mechanics on a break and carpenters at the pub after work, to university academics chatting at work after hours, as well as a variety of mixed groups. The focus of the book is the stories that occur within these conversations."--Jacket

The sociolinguistics of narrative by Joanna Thornborrow( Book )
18 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 207 libraries worldwide
"This book aims to appraise sociolinguistic work devoted to the form and function of storytelling and to examine in detail the ways in which narrative constitutes a fundamental discursive resource across a range of contexts. The chapters presented here bring together some of the most recent work in the theory and practice of narrative analysis from a broad sociolinguistic perspective. They address some of the questions left implicit whenever stories are brought within the analytic frame of sociolinguistics. The data come both from institutional settings such as workplaces, courtrooms, schools, and the media, as well as from informal everyday settings."--Jacket
Women, men and everyday talk by Jennifer Coates( Book )
11 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in English and held by 140 libraries worldwide
"Women, Men and Everyday Talk" brings together a selection of some of the author's key papers on language and gender, and provides an overview of the development of language and gender studies over the last 30 years, with particular emphasis on conversational data and on single sex friendship groups. The main theme running throughout the book is that gender plays a significant role in the construction of the linguistic landscape of our everyday lives. These lively essays on language and gender topics are illustrated with examples from the author's data-base of spontaneous talk, and are written in an accessible style
Making icons : repetition and the female image in Japanese cinema, 1945-1964 by Jennifer Coates( Book )
8 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 64 libraries worldwide
One distinctive feature of post-war Japanese cinema is the frequent recurrence of imagistic and narrative tropes and formulaic characterizations in female representations. These repetitions are important, Jennifer Coates asserts, because sentiments and behaviors forbidden during the war and post-war social and political changes were often articulated by or through the female image. Moving across major character types, from mothers to daughters, and schoolteachers to streetwalkers, Making Icons studies the role of the media in shaping the attitudes of the general public. Japanese cinema after the defeat is shown to be an important ground where social experiences were explored, reworked, and eventually accepted or rejected by the audience emotionally invested in these repetitive materials. An examination of 600 films produced and distributed between 1945 and 1964, as well as numerous Japanese-language sources, forms the basis of this rigorous study. Making Icons draws on an art-historical iconographic analysis to explain how viewers derive meanings from images during this peak period of film production and attendance in Japan
