Linear or nonlinear utility functions in logit models? : the impact on German high speed rail demand forecasts by Benedikt Mandel( Book )
6 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and held by 11 libraries worldwide
The paper shows that nonlinearity of the representative utility functions of the Logit model applied to an intercity mode choice model implied the presence of asymmetry and of thresholds in the response curve, as well as results that had more reasonable properties (diminishing marginal values of time saving, elasticities, and values of time that differed among the modes), and yielded very different high speed rail market shares for Germany than results obtained with the usual linear utility functions
Debt, moral hazard and airline safety : an empirical evidence by Université de Montréal( Book )
6 editions published between 1993 and 1994 in English and held by 10 libraries worldwide
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the relationship between the financial structure of airlines and the safety decisions of managers. It shows that an increase in the debt-equity ratio is theoretically ambiguous on safety. It also provides new econometric results on airline accidents by using a model derived from the Katz family of distributions
Comparative statics under multiple sources of risk with applications to insurance demand by Georges Dionne( Book )
6 editions published in 1991 in English and French and held by 10 libraries worldwide
This paper proposes an answer to the following problem of comparative statics in models with multiple sources of risks: how a risk averse agent will change his coinsurance demand when the distribution of the insurable loss is shifted? To answer the question, the paper first comments on Jack Meyer's results and then shows how an alternate approach leads to more definitive comparative statics

From correlation to distributed contiguities : a family of AR-C-D autocorrelation processes by Ulrich Blum( Book )
6 editions published between 1990 and 1995 in English and held by 9 libraries worldwide
This paper distinguishes between correlation and autocorrelation among values of regression variables or residual errors and defines a family of autoregressive, contiguous, and distributed processes to extract the systematic information that they contain using discrete Boolean impact matrices. The paper focuses on two cases, called the R-Koyck and R-Almon first-order specifications. After describing the properties of the first process, the paper provides a numerical illustration in which a production function is estimated based on cross-sectional data. The paper then briefly discusses the applicability of the process to other problems such as time series models and to models in other fields than economics, as well as its possible use on specific variables in regression models. Finally, the paper describes the Almon formulation and discusses extensions and other considerations
An economic analysis of insurance fraud by Georges Dionne( Book )
5 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 9 libraries worldwide
This paper emphasizes that a clear definition of insurance fraud has to be provided by the industry so as to be able to measure its extent before any major preventive and correction measures are undertaken. It shows that intermediaries are important in insurance fraud. It discusses classic insurance contracts which are not designed to take into account insurance fraud and for which some clauses might even encourage economic agents to engage in fraudulent activities. It also emphasizes the role of competition between insurers as a factor which might slow the battle against fraud. Finally, it presents statistical results from a study pertaining to accidents in the workplace

Adverse selection, commitment and renegotiation : extension to and evidence from insurance markets by Georges Dionne( Book )
5 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 8 libraries worldwide
Under conditions of asymmetric information, commitment to long-term contracts may permit markets to approach first best allocations. However, commitment is fragile and may be undermined by opportunistic behaviour, notably renegotiation. This paper examines the role of commitment in automobile insurance markets, showing that fully separating strategies, when renegotiation proofed, offers the same ex ante welfare as a replication of single period equilibria. An alternative model (which extends Laffont and Tirole's 1990 model of procurement to address uncertainty and competition) which involves partial pooling in the first period followed by separation is also presented
Rendements d'échelle, progrès technique et croissance de la productivité dans les industries québécoise et ontarienne de transport par camion, 1981-1988 by Georges Dionne( Book )
3 editions published between 1988 and 1992 in French and held by 8 libraries worldwide
