Cambrian intelligence the early history of the new AI by Rodney Allen Brooks( file )
14 editions published in 1999 in English and Portuguese and held by 2,074 libraries worldwide
Until the mid-1980s, AI researchers assumed that an intelligent system doing high-level reasoning was necessary for the coupling of perception and action. In this traditional model, cognition mediates between perception and plans of action. Realizing that this core AI, as it was known, was illusory, Rodney A. Brooks turned the field of AI on its head by introducing the behavior-based approach to robotics. The cornerstone of behavior-based robotics is the realization that the coupling of perception and action gives rise to all the power of intelligence and that cognition is only in the eye of an observer. Behavior-based robotics has been the basis of successful applications in entertainment, service industries, agriculture, mining, and the home. It has given rise to both autonomous mobile robots and more recent humanoid robots such as Brooks' Cog.This book represents Brooks' initial formulation of and contributions to the development of the behavior-based approach to robotics. It presents all of the key philosophical and technical ideas that put this "bottom-up" approach at the forefront of current research in not only AI but all of cognitive science
Flesh and machines : how robots will change us by Rodney Allen Brooks( Book )

The director of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab speculates about the future of humankind as it explores the relationship between humans and technologically engineered robots and examines the vast capabilities of such machines
Artificial life IV proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on the Synthesis and Simulation of Living Systems by International Workshop on Artificial Life( file )
15 editions published between 1994 and 1996 in English and Danish and held by 1,430 libraries worldwide
"The field of artificial life has recently emerged through the interaction of research in biology, physics, parallel computing, artificial intelligence, and complex adaptive systems. The goal is to understand, through synthetic experiments, the organizational principles underlying the dynamics (usually the nonlinear dynamics) of living systems. This book brings together contributions to the Fourth Artificial Life Workshop, held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the summer of 1994."--Publisher's description
Fast, cheap & out of control by Errol Morris( visu )
9 editions published between 1996 and 2007 in English and held by 779 libraries worldwide
Acclaimed filmmaker Errol Morris paints a fascinating portrait of four obsessed eccentrics. Morris weaves interviews with a wild animal trainer, a topiary gardener, a robot designer and an expert on the naked mole rat together with old movies, cartoons and stock footage for a compelling, kaleidoscopic look at the very thin line which separates madness from genius

How does the brain create that internal space called consciousness? In this program, top names in cognitive science such as Daniel Dennett, Rodney Brooks, Endel Tulving, and John Searle delve into the mechanics of perception and cognition and speculate on the meaning of consciousness. Using advanced technology, they and other experts seek to understand the brain, leading to discussion of concepts that include mind-body dualism, self-emergent organization, unconscious vision, and even socially interactive machines like MIT's Cog
