In this expanded and updated third edition of an important work, respected Pauline scholar Victor Paul Furnish presents an analysis of some of Paul's most famous yet often misunderstood ethical teachings. Dr. Furnish enriches his discussion of key Pauline topics including: sex, marriage, divorce, homosexuality, women in the church, and the Church in the world. He pays particular attention to the socio-cultural context of Paul's ministry, the complexity of his thought, the character of his moral reasoning, and the way his thought and reasoning may inform and challenge us today. Victor Paul Furnish is University Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Emeritus at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, and general editor of the Abingdon New Testament Commentaries

Jesus according to Paul by Victor Paul Furnish( Book )
9 editions published between 1993 and 1995 in English and held by 467 libraries worldwide
"Paul's letters are the earliest surviving Christian writings and therefore the earliest documentary evidence for what Jesus's followers knew and said about him. The present volume deals with questions frequently asked about Paul. Did he know Jesus personally? If not, then how much did Paul know about Jesus, and how did this information come to him? Where in his letters does Paul make use of Jesus's teachings, how does he employ them, and what kind of authority does he accord them? Above all, why does Paul place so much emphasis on Jesus' death and resurrection? How is he able to proclaim these as saving events? Finally, a closing chapter considers how several writings in the Pauline tradition variously continued and altered the apostle's own interpretation of Jesus. Because these Pauline understandings of Jesus have remained so influential across twenty centuries, the more fully they are appreciated the more one is helped in understanding Jesus today"--Publisher's description

1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians by Victor Paul Furnish( Book )
3 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 198 libraries worldwide
Accepting the widespread view that 1 Thessalonians is the earliest surviving Pauline letter, Furnish commends reading it as fully as possible on its own terms, without presupposing or imposing themes or positions that are explicit only in letters of a later date. While he agrees with commentators who note this letter's pastoral aims and character, he is more convinced than some that it also exhibits a rich and coherent theological point of view. Furnish interprets 2 Thessalonians as the work of an anonymous Paulinist writing several decades after the apostle's death. He regards this letter, too, as historically and theologically valuable, although less for what it discloses about Paul's ministry and thought than for what it shows about the reception and interpretation of Paul in the late first-century church. - From the publisher

I Corinthians : a new translation by William F Orr( Book )

I Corinthians is Volume 32 in the Anchor Bible series of new book-by-book translations of the Old and New Testaments and Apocrypha. William S. Orr and James Arthur Walther are, respectively, Professor Emeritus and Associate Professor of New Testament at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. St. Paul's I Corinthians stands as one of the Bible's greatest masterpieces and certainly one of the greatest contributions to Christian theology. The epistle "To the Church which is in Corinth ..." addresses itself to the basic tenets of Christian faith as well as down-to-earth matters of moral conduct and standards of Christian living, including such topics as speaking in tongues, the Resurrection, the Lord's Supper, and the problems of marriage. This letter also includes Paul's memorable definition of Christian love. The man who laid the foundations of Christian theology remains important not only for what he taught, but for who he was. Professors Orr and Walther ask--and answer--"What Kind of Man Was Paul?" in their own extended introductory biography of the man: a look at his life, his ministry, and his beliefs
