The wild geese of the Antrim MacDonnells by Hector McDonnell( Book )
7 editions published between 1996 and 1999 in English and held by 110 libraries worldwide
This book focuses on the descendants of Sorley Boy MacDonnell, d. 1590, and his wife, Mary O'Neill, daughter of Conn O'Neill, 1st Earl of Antrim. Several of their descendants fled to Europe. Part 1 deals with his grandson, Captain Sorley MacDonnell, d. 1632, who joined the O'Neill Regiment in the Spanish Netherlands. Part 2 treats the family of Captain Sorley's nephews, Randell, d. 1711, and Daniel, 1656-1734. Randell's wife was Hannah Roche of the Norman Irish family. This branch fled to France between 1688 and 1745. Part 3 covers the period 1720-1820 in Spain. Alexander, 3rd Earl of Antrim (1615-1696), had an illegitmate son, Daniel MacDonnell, (his mother was Honora MacDonnell) who became the progenitor of the MacDonnells in Spain
Dublin's other poetry : rhymes and songs of the city by John Wyse Jackson( Book )
3 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 64 libraries worldwide
"Dublin's writers rarely remain solemn for long: their wicked sense of humour has travelled the world. This is an irresistible new anthology of what used to be called 'comic and curious verse' about the city, written by some of her most entertaining poets and songwriters." "Fashions in verse come and go. Too often we forget - paradoxically - the most memorable works of wit, sarcasm or absurdity. The ones gathered here were written over four centuries, and were inspired by many things - among them love, injustice, history, politics, animals and alcohol, but most of all by the citizens of Dublin themselves. Whether the lines are satirical, sentimental, subversive, sexy or just plain silly, you will find that many of them show a rare seriousness as well." "Each poem comes with background information about where it originated, and each page is illuminated by Hector McDonnell's wonderful, witty drawings."--Jacket

Ulster's other poetry : rhymes and songs of the province by Hector McDonnell( Book )
4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 56 libraries worldwide
ULSTER' S OTHER POETRY proves that the people of Ulster have never been humourless or dour. Far from it. With its sparkling variety of rhymes, songs and humorous poems from every tradition of the province, the book demonstrates that those who dwell in the northern quarter of Ireland have their own unique take on the strange ways of the world, coupled with a whole-hearted appreciation of good fun. Spanning over three centuries of Ulster's past, this anthology is full of comic pleasures. In its pages, country ballads jostle with city satires, songs aimed at children meet jingles advertising bre
Ireland's other history by Hector McDonnell( Book )
6 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and held by 46 libraries worldwide
From the uncertain first dawn of human presence on the island, to the death of the old order at Kinsale in 1602, Hector McDonnell delves into Ireland's cultural past. Although the island has always been a world apart, it has also been a destination for people looking for a place to settle, or for desired raw materials. The author traces the material and linguistic influences of other parts of Europe and beyond on the Irish character, and the drastic effects of prehistoric climatic upheavals and market collapses, while examining their legacy and relevance to today's environmental, economic and cultural concerns
