Joe Hill was a Swedish-American labor activist, songwriter and member of the I.W.W. While he was in Utah, he was convicted of murder in a controversial trial. After an unsuccessful appeal, political debates and international calls for clemency from high profile people and workers' organizations, he was executed. On 19 Nov. 1915 he was executed by a firing squad. After his execution, his body was sent to Chicago for cremation. His ashes were placed in envelopes and mailed throughout the world to different people and labor organizations to scatter. Most organizations scattered them.
