Duncan Phyfe and drum : with notes for the Bugle Corps by Donald L Weismann( Book )
1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 10 libraries worldwide
With a fine-tuned sense of the profound and the ridiculous, Duncan Phyfe and Drum with Notes for the Bugle Corps is an artful blend of poetry and pedantry. Witty, erudite, burlesque, philosophical, it engages its readers in a uniquely entertaining way. Against a seriously conceived long poem, Duncan Phyfe and Drum, Weismann plays an array of 102 absurd footnotes, Notes for the Bugle Corps, in a rollicking parody of academic "textual analysis." But more than have readers experience either the serious poem or the far-fetched footnoting, he would have them experience the effects, of this ridiculous and often outrageously comical juxtaposition. It is the quality of this disparity common to contemporary experience that Weismann would have the reader recognize and respond to as a pervasive fact. But Weismann doesn't leave it there. He has a suspicion that if we focus on the collision of the profound and the absurd-on the "beat-note" created in the reader by this continually repeating impact-we just might detect clues toward a new, more humanely comfortable "logic" than the one we think we live by now. With this in mind, he asks the reader to listen for this "beat-note." Duncan Phyfe and Drum with Notes for the Bugle Corps is both fun and fascinating as it runs from incest to magic, from baptism to murder and from the making of Irish whisky to the making of Richard Nixon. It offers rich reading for anyone who takes pleasure in the power of words, lively images and that perversely illusive something we call "meaning."
