The Stepping Out (Western Australia) program is a professional development program which aims to give teachers of Years 6 to 10 the skills to assist students make measurable progress in literary skills. The program was initiated in 1993. This teacher evaluation was conducted at the end of 1994 as a guide to future directions. The survey of 1000 teachers shows that more than 60 per cent rated the program as very valuable, that it improved their understanding of literacy and learning, and it had frequently assisted individual children

Stepping Out (Western Australia) is professional development program which encourages teachers in all subject areas to develop literacy and provides them with a range of teaching strategies which encourage literacy skills. In this report, an analysis is made of the responses to a questionnaire returned from 17 Senior High schools. Most of the respondent teachers had completed the Stepping Out professional development program and more than 90 per cent of them used the strategies in at least some of their lessons
