"Organizing Words presents a series of essays on some 220 widely used - and much debated - terms in the social sciences and organization studies. Each essay explores the meanings and uses of the word, as well as some of the controversies that surround it. The book aims to be a first port of call for students, researchers, and scholars who wish to familiarize themselves with these key ideas and use them in their own work." "The book is neither an encyclopaedia nor a dictionary, but a thesaurus. As such, it combines the original sense of a thesaurus as a treasure trove with its more contemporary meaning as an accessible and practical resource." "Primarily aimed at those engaged in social and organizational studies (or research), the book will appeal to all those interested in the human sciences. It does not claim to be canonical or all-inclusive, but each entry seeks to enlighten and help, without patronizing or obscuring disagreements and difficulties. The book seeks to be re-assuring without being complacent or 'comfortable', to be authoritative without being doctrinaire, and to be critical without being destructive." "Words help us express ourselves and make sense of our experiences and our actions; and they also help us organize ourselves, our thoughts, and our universe. Organizing Words will be an invaluable resource for essay-writing and a useful tool in planning and carrying out projects and dissertations." "Most of the entries have been written by Yiannis Gabriel, with 40 essays coming from internationally renowned scholars."--Jacket

The unmanageable consumer : contemporary consumption and its fragmentations by Yiannis Gabriel( Book )
20 editions published between 1995 and 2002 in English and held by 433 libraries worldwide
"Consumption and concepts of the consumer sit at the centre of numerous current debates - academic, political and environmental. This highly readable and stimulating book, a tour-de-force in the breadth of its coverage and analysis, shows how different traditions (discourses) have constructed different representations of the consumer. Each of these has its own coherence but rarely addresses alternative positions. A key concern of the authors is to identify, disentangle and juxtapose approaches to contemporary consumption which are seldom found in a single text." "The Unmanageable Consumer will be essential reading for all those interested in the processes and dilemmas of contemporary consumption, including students and professionals in marketing, organization theory, management studies, psychology, sociology, cultural studies and consumer studies."--Jacket

Return to meaning : a social science with something to say by Mats Alvesson( file )
9 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 200 libraries worldwide
This book argues that we are currently witnessing not merely a decline in the quality of social science research, but the proliferation of meaningless research, of no value to society, and modest value to its authors--apart from securing employment and promotion. The explosion of published outputs, at least in social science, creates a noisy, cluttered environment which makes meaningful research difficult, as different voices compete to capture the limelight even briefly. Older, more significant contributions are easily neglected, as the premium is to write and publish, not read and learn. The result is a widespread cynicism among academics on the value of academic research, sometimes including their own. Publishing comes to be seen as a game of hits and misses, devoid of intrinsic meaning and value, and of no wider social uses whatsoever. Academics do research in order to get published, not to say something socially meaningful. This is what we view as the rise of nonsense in academic research, which represents a serious social problem. It undermines the very point of social science. This problem is far from 'academic'. It affects many areas of social and political life entailing extensive waste of resources and inflated student fees as well as costs to tax-payers. Part two of the book offers a range of proposals aimed at restoring meaning at the heart of social research and drawing social science back address the major problems and issues that face our societies
