Kiefer and Wolfowitz (1959) proved that the optimal design for estimating the highest coefficient in polynomial regression is supported by certain Tchebycheff points. Hoel and Levine (1964) showed that the optimal designs for extrapolation in polynomial regression were all supported by the Tchebycheff points. These results were extended by Kiefer and Wolfowitz (1965) to cover nonpolynomial regression problems involving Tchebycheff systems and the large class of designs supported by the Tchebycheff points was characterized. In the present paper it is shown that the optimal design for estimating any specific parameter is supported by one of two sets of Tchebycheff points. Different proofs of the Kiefer-Wolfowitz results are also presented. (Author)

A problem of subset selection for parameters which are not necessarily scale or location parameters is considered. A general theorem dealing with the infimum of the probability of a correct selection for parameters occurring in densities which are Poisson mixtures of arbitrary densities on the interval (0, infinity) is proved. This theorem is applied to obtain the minimum value of the probability of a correct selection in several cases where multivariate normal populations are ranked according to a given scalar quantity

A function phi(t) is called completely momotone (CM) on (o, infinity) if ( -1) raised to the nth power phi(t) = or> o, n = 0, 1, ... and t> o. Bernstein's theorem states that a function phi is CM if and only if phi is the Laplace transform of a measure on (o, infinity). Moreover the generating measure can be obtained from phi by applying a sequence of differential operators to phi. These two results are generalized to the case where ( -1) raised to the nth power phi(t) = or> o, n = 0,1, ... is replaced by an infinite sequence of differential inequalities of a special type.
